MAHLE Boosts Profitability Amid Market Headwinds

» The automotive supplier MAHLE closed the 2024 financial year with a positive consolidated net result, despite challenging market conditions. Operating profit (EBIT) increased from €304 million to €423 million, raising the EBIT margin to 3.6 percent. However, sales fell 5.6 percent organically to €11.7 billion, largely due to weak markets in Europe and North America and sluggish EV demand outside China.

» Music fans and "crate diggers" enjoyed Record Store Day (RSD) last weekend. The inaugural event was first held in the US in 2007, on the third Saturday of April and on Black Friday in November. The idea, according to USA Today, was to "celebrate the culture of the independently owned record store" and indie outlets banded together with the support of the Coalition of Independent Music Stores and the Alliance of Independent Media Stores.

The former, as you may well be aware, has just started self-releasing her own music to wide acclaim. Lukpeach, on the other hand, found herself snug under the wing of Malama Collective, a co-op record label founded by Bangkok-based indie-music streaming platform Fungjai.

» From 1977 to 1988, there were at least 1,436 alleged cases of arbitrary detention, 58 forced disappearances, 148 torture, and 345 extrajudicial killings in Thailand. We know these figures because an NGO investigated and reported these cases at a time when the idea of human rights excited optimism about justice and the rule of law. Amnesty International encouraged international activists to protest individual cases. Thai authorities investigated and whitewashed each case. This became standard procedure. After a time the NGO gave up. Nobody was punished.

» There's always an underlying sense of deadpan humour and laid-back nihilism to the way Kurt Vile approaches his music. This is especially true on his previous two records (2015's b'lieve i'm goin down and last year's collaborative effort with Courtney Barnett Lotta Sea Lice) as well as his latest, Bottle It In, which marks his first new solo work in three years. Recorded in several locations around the US while on tour, the 78-minute album is helmed with assistance from indie rock's upper echelon of producers including Rob Schnapf (Elliot Smith) and Peter Katis (The National, Japandroids), plus fellow artists ranging from Kim Gordon to Warpaint's drummer Stella Mozgawa.
