LIFE

Three flavours

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 03/02/2012

» Baseball geeks will revel in the chance to cheer along with the underdog that makes it, the league-stinker that stuns the big-spender, with the help of digital tinkering. But even if you're illiterate in the great American game, this sport drama has enough of a broad sweep to hook you along with Billy Beane, the real-life manager of Oakland Athletics who, in 2001, gambled with the then-unthinkable strategy of computer analysis and took his team on a 20-match winning streak. That Beane is played by Brad Pitt _ boyish, beaming and bright-eyed _ is, if not exactly a grand slam, a pretty swooping homerun.

Meeting of Mindsets

Life, Gerry Popplestone, Published on 30/01/2012

» This young guy seemed surprised that I wanted to take his picture. It was Chinese New Year's Day and I, too, was surprised _ intrigued to find him hard at work and in Yaowarat of all places. I've no idea how many hours he has already put into the carving. It's an intricate piece of work, with elephants, foliage from the jungle and, of course, some fiery dragons! What struck me most, apart from the care he has lavished on the carving, was that he had no idea how valuable this kind of work can be. Nor how much talented woodcarvers like him would earn in the wealthier countries of the West.

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 25/01/2012

» Last year in the hyperkinetic film Fast Five, Dwayne Johnson growled and grumbled playing the role of a federal agent chasing a pack of auto-bandits in Rio de Janeiro. Johnson, also known as The Rock, is a prime cut of beef that glitters in the Brazilian sun; yet the man holds his character with gravity, zipping through the breakneck action with all scowl and no smile.

Child's Play

» Puyais are sooo overrated. They're just big kids who run Thailand yet no problems ever seem to get solved. Tomorrow (Jan 14) is Thailand's National Children's Day and sometimes we wonder if children should be running the nation instead. It's only fair because they are going to inherit everything we pseudo-adults have accomplished, or lack thereof, anyway. Guru asked kids what solutions they have for Thailand's various problems. Here's what the future generation is thinking, for better or worse.
