» One recent morning at Nopphrat Thara beach, the high tide flooded the lower part of a strange, interwoven structure. Rising from the blue water of the bay, it looked like an island, a new, unmapped island of Krabi visible from this popular spot where tourists visit and board tour boats to outlying islands.

» The Royal City Bangkok Film Club will be screening two movies from Azerbaijan and Taiwan for free (with drinks and snacks) at River City Bangkok. This is a rather new screening venue, established with the aim of becoming a space for alternative cinema. The location, by the river near Si Phraya, is also a change of atmosphere.

» The native home of the Evenki, the most widely scattered “nomads of the mountains”, is near Lake Baikal in southern Siberia. Imperial Russia of the 17th century began expanding ruthlessly into this remote area by sending the cossacks — border patrols — of Tsarist governments to impose a fur tax on the Evenki tribes. Although some rebelled, the Evenki generally realised that peaceful contact with Russia was a necessity to its survival. Two centuries later, after an ambivalent relationship with Russia and other tribesmen, some Evenki migrated southward and eastward to Mongolia and Manchuria.
