So much art, so little time

» Chiang Mai got its fill last weekend, and now it's time for the Bangkok edition of Galleries' Night, organised by the French embassy. First of all, it just amazes you how active the scene is. Running on Friday and Saturday, there will be more than 40 galleries participating in the event where venues open late into the night.

» The atmosphere at the Jim Thompson Art Center is seemingly intimidating. Two larger-than-life rifles stand threateningly tall. In a 24-channel video installation, entitled The Game, we see military-clad twin brothers on a motorcycle, rifles in hands.

» At NACC, a small and bare art space in the much-hyped Soi Nana near the Hua Lamphong MRT station, works in different media -- installation, photography and video -- from five artists are thrown together. One video shows a sound artist, covered in the fluidity of lighting projection, lost in his own music while another features a woman holding a block of ice in the middle of the sea.
Threading her way through Islam

» The painting looks computerised, yet there are imperfections as if it was made by hand. Looking closely, the forms on the work seem abstract, yet from afar, they are clearly human figures kneeling down as if praying. Entitled Jamaah 2, an Arabic term loosely meaning the act of doing good in congregation with the community, the work is by Thidarat Chantachua, and it was the winner of the 2015 UOB Painting of the Year Award in the Established Artist Category.
One for the books

» Bangkok just can't get enough of literary input, and we are talking about just the month of August alone. Last month there was the Bangkok Book Festival, and ongoing until this Sunday is the much-hyped Big Bad Wolf Book Sale, offering 60-80% discounts on 2 million copies of English language books from every imaginable genre. It's a fair where many have spent money on books they probably won't get to read in this lifetime.

» As the title "Human AlieNation" suggests, the current exhibition at The Art Centre, Silpakorn University, concerns a sense of alienation on many levels, from individually, groups in society, to collectively as a nation.

» Although this coming weekend is not the second Saturday of January, it does feel like Children's Day. In fact, it's more like Children's Week, because until next Sunday, the capital is holding its first-ever Bangkok International Children's Theatre Festival (BICT 2016).

» It has been eight years since writer Chart Kobjitti, national artist and two-time SEA Write Award winner, published his book Lorm Wong Khui, a collection of articles written for Si San magazine. Eight years is a long time, especially for fans of various generations who literally grew up with his writing, from the cursed life of Ai-fak in 1981's Khamphiphaksa (The Judgement) that won his first SEA Write award, and the tumultuous story of life, friendship and lots of booze in 1988's Phan Ma Ba, to a miserable account of age and death in a nursing home in 1993's Wela (Time), for which he won the award once again.
Unseen and not heard in the city

» The massive space on the seventh floor of Bangkok Art and Culture Centre is now filled with a series of grainy and greyish photographs. Viewers should be warned that the experience there can be rather disorientating; not only are the photos random, they seem to have been arranged almost impulsively. Entitled "Omnivoyeur And Electrical Walks Bangkok", these photographs by Miti Ruangkritya only make up one part of the show, which is only complete when sounds by German sound artist Christina Kubisch are added.
Out of the sunlight

» Every use of the word "sunlight" in Duncan Macmillan's play Every Brilliant Thing, was replaced with "sunset" by director Pawit Mahasarinand in his Thai adaptation, which has just finished its run at Chulalongkorn University's Sodsai Pantoomkomol Centre for Dramatic Arts last week.
