» To start any golf swing a forward press of some sort is required to start the action. Naturally we don't start many movements from a dead start. Your hands, hips, shoulders and legs will rock forward a little bit to help the reaction that gives the momentum needed for the backswing. This initiates the turn and the shift of the weight to the right foot; your hands will follow your turn into the backswing and your left heel will rise.

» We seldom hit our middle-iron approach shots past the pin and there are those who preach hitting one club stronger, for example if the shot calls for a 7-iron, choose a 6-iron instead and hit it easier. However, l feel that it's better to take the 7-iron and hit it harder with the thought of getting the ball all the way to the hole.

But my answer is invariably too simple, as the average golfer thinks there's a secret that makes a middle-iron shot land on the green and dance backwards.

» Practising the short game is what many of us know we should be doing but the thrill of smacking many drives in a row in the hope of a few good ones is an obsession that most golfers have and alas -- only causes fatigue and bad habits.

» If you shoot around 95 you will see improvement in 5-shot jumps if you practice diligently and take a few lessons. Equally, a player who scores say 87 will quickly come down to 81/80. The next downward plunge would be to the middle 70's. Once you play 75 regularly you are not an average golfer but will be seen as pretty good.

» When going for a putt, try to grip the club mostly in the fingers so that you can use the natural hinging action of the wrists freely.

» Don't worry about how pretty your swing may look because the longer you play many movements will happen automatically.

» When your left arm reaches parallel to the ground in your backswing, make sure the clubhead is as far away from your body as possible.
