» When practising on the putting green, always choose a level area, or perhaps somewhere where you'll be putting slightly uphill. It's true that a ball that never reaches the cup never goes in, but neither does the ball that goes past it.

» Like chipping, the first fundamental to learn about the putting stroke is to try to keep your hands even with or in front of the head of the putter on the follow through. The putting stroke is an individual matter however, the routine before the ball is struck should be that you read your line from behind the ball. Walk to the ball from behind and take your stance with your hands slightly ahead of the ball or straight up. Look at the hole and look at your putter face to make sure it's square to your line.

» The first important, foremost fundamental to learn about chipping is to try and keep your hands ahead of or even with the clubhead on the follow-through. Grip down slightly and flex your knees and keep the club near to you, instead of reaching out to the ball and move your weight a little more onto your left foot.

» The main difference in swinging a 7-iron and a driver is that you want to hit your driver slightly on the upswing, or at the lowest point of the swing. There are coaches who want their students to practise with a 3-iron thinking that if they can hit a 3-iron all others will be a piece of cake. Perhaps this is true, but this could be looked at as back to front -- because it's easier to learn to hit a good 7-iron first, so when moving to a 3-iron it would not be an issue.

» Finish with your forearms in front of you. A good finish shows what has gone on before it, let your head come up to look at the good shot. On your follow-through, the right foot merely helps to hold your balance. If you lose your balance whilst trying to do a perfect swing it is probably because your grip is too weak or too tight or both.

» Slicing is caused by the hands leading the head of the club. Tenseness plays a big role in the clubface being open at impact. Anyone who is slicing realises that the harder they try to hit the more they will slice.

» It's the crossing of the forearms that put the punch in a golf shot. And it's the club going off the line that produces the majority of bad shots. If you feel that your hands are joined together and feel they are as one unit, you will be surprised at the amount of relaxation you'll attain.

» Turning away from the ball and then back through it again is, in reality, a simple movement that has been made to seem complicated by differing teaching theories.

» To start any golf swing a forward press of some sort is required to start the action. Naturally we don't start many movements from a dead start. Your hands, hips, shoulders and legs will rock forward a little bit to help the reaction that gives the momentum needed for the backswing. This initiates the turn and the shift of the weight to the right foot; your hands will follow your turn into the backswing and your left heel will rise.

» The position of the ball is second only to the grip, and mistakes in grip and ball position are mistakes made before the swing that may ruin any thoughts of a good swing even before you've swung. Many golf coaches teach that the ball should be played off the left heel for all shots however, I'm not a fan of this doctrine as only very good players can do this off good lies. But if you play the ball off your left heel with a 9-iron, you must have a very fast hip shift to meet the club with the ball on the downswing.
