Published caption : A family celebrates the completion of their new fishing boat by holding a ceremony which starts with the burning of a little piece of kamyan (benjamin gum). Also called gum benzoin, this is traditionally used in in cense making and perfumery and is obtained from a tree native to Southeast Asia. After the air is filled with the gum’s fragrance, the family members hold hands and pray for a short while. The last part of the ritual is for them to share a meal together on board the new vessel.
