Published caption : The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia — tourists shorten its name to the Queen Sofia Museum — is the main repository in Spain for 20th-century art. Opened in September 1992 and named after the wife of the current monarch, King Juan Carlos, the museum has an impressive collection of contemporary art and also hosts regular temporary exhibitions. It is housed in a former hospital building that was extensively renovated and fitted with avant-garde glass lifts. Masterpieces on display here include works by the two greatest Spanish artists of the last century — Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali. The most viewed painting is Picasso’s Guernica, created in response to the horrific bombing of a village in northern Spain by German and Italian warplanes in 1937 during the Spanish Civil War. Also on display here are works by Joan Miro, Juan Gris and Julio Gonzalez as well as pieces by several non-Spanish artists. For more details visit museoreinasofia.es/en.
