Wang Na: Wat Bovornsatharnsuthavart, or Wat PhraKaeo Wang Na, was a part of the old FrontPalace. With the art of the Third Reign, thistemple was commissioned by Krom PhraRatchawangbovorn Mahasakdipollasep, theviceroy of King Rama III. Its only hall has ajaturamook-style roof with four gable ends,decorated with khruang lamyong, like theGrand Palace’s throne halls.According to oral history, its founder hadintended to build a prasart-style roofreserved for kings only, but his attemptwas stopped by King Rama III citinginappropriateness. The doors and windowsof the hall are decorated with Chinesepottery and stucco flowers on the outside.Murals on the interior walls of Wat PhraKaeo Wang Na’s only hall depict the legendof Phra Phuttha Sihing as well as Hindugods. Meanwhile, the hall’s principalBuddha statue, a standing one with hishands lifting at the level of the chest, isenshrined on an unfinished throne becausethe temple’s founder passed away at theage of 47, in 1832, before the project wouldbe completed. Eighteen years later, in thereign of King Rama IV, the second monarch,King Pinklao, had the palace and the templerestored. He had murals depicting thelegend of Phra Phuttha Sihing and the livesof the 28 Buddhas painted on the hall’slower and upper interior walls. However, theking passed away before his wish to relocatePhra Phuttha Sihing from PhutthaisawanThrone Hall to this hall could be fulfilled.
