Residents of Chon Buri's Bang Lamung district, protest Phase 3 of Laem Chabang port's expansion. Villagers facing land reclamation have to move elsewhere. The port has undergone two development phases totaling 68,840 rai, and the Transport Ministry has proposed a 120-billion-baht third phase for the Laem Chabang project over seven years to expand the busy port. The proposed expansion will increase the port's annual cargo-handling capacity to 18.8 million 20-foot equivalent units. At present, the port handles 55% of Thailand's trade. The port expansion is one of the projects aimed at connecting the Eastern Seaboard to a planned deep-sea port and industrial estate in Dawei, Myanmar.
