Published caption : This Lanna style temple is Wat Intharawat. Locals still call it by its old name — Wat Ton Kwaen. The temple was named after the Indian plum tree (or ton takhob pa and ton kwaen in the Lanna dialect). The wild trees were found in plenty at the temple in the past, yet only one tree remains today. Built from 1856-1869, the temple was a stop for a procession to carry Buddha’s relics from Wat Phrathat Si Chom Thong in Chom Thong district to Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep for the city ruler and the people to pay respect and pour water on the relics, over the container, in the past. Wat Ton Kwaen won the outstanding architectural award of the Association of Siamese Architects in 1989. The temple is also the model of the royal pavilion or Ho Kham Luang, which is the exhibition hall in Royal Park Rajapruek.
