» The Sanam Luang area has become the epicentre of emotion. Hundreds of thousands of grief-stricken Thais have converged there to pay their respects to the late His Majesty the King at the nearby Sala Sahathai Samakhom Pavilion inside the Grand Palace. During the day it is a surging sea of people, and late into the night black-clad mourners still linger on the grass lawn. Meanwhile, volunteers come to offer food, water and other services such as free transportation and paramedic services to visitors who come from every province around the country.

Popular annual trade and sales events -- such as the Bangkok International Motor Show, which ended last week -- have uncharacteristically experienced lukewarm responses. Yet organisers of the National Book Fair, just ended, have reason to celebrate, as bookworms swarmed the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre over the past two weeks. It seems that despite the economic downturn and limitless entertainment options, people still buy books.

» Harnessing the documentary film as a tool for awareness, Bang Pakong Alliance, a local conservation network, has created a documentary feature, Bang Pakong Sai Nam Haeng Chevit (Bang Pakong, River Of Life) to be aired on Thai PBS tomorrow night at 9.20pm. The Bang Pakong Alliance comprises local villagers, in partnership with a group of respected documentary photographers (10FOTO), and together they believe that the documentary film has the power to tell their story.

» The year-end holidays are approaching and it means millions are going to do some travelling, either locally or overseas, while some may just prefer to seize the opportunity to stay in quiet Bangkok. For Thais, some of the popular destinations are the mountainous national parks, such as Doi Inthanon in Chiang Mai or Khao Yai. Living in a hot climate, we love to seek out the cooler places; last year, just over 93,100 holidaymakers spent their New Year holidays in one of 14 national parks, bringing in revenue of 3.58 million baht, according to the Department of National Parks (DNP).

Keep on running

» I started calling myself a runner, albeit an amateur, on the third Sunday of November 2013, after I ran my first ever mini-marathon of 10km at the legendary Standard Chartered Bangkok Marathon (SCBM). For the local running community, the event is like a rite of passage, where novices participate in the "Fun Run" of 5km, while others do something more arduous, or even get a taste of the life-changing experience of a full 42K marathon. Many runners, including myself, have fond memories of the event because SCBM was their very first running competition. It is with one step that a person begin his or her relationship with the lonely, addictive and meditative-like act of running.

Educating our kids is child's play

» I clapped and cheered when the Ministry of Education last month imposed a new law requiring classes in schools nationwide to finish at 2pm, instead of 4pm. The two-hour gap must be compensated by activities, however, despite the policy not specifying what kind of after-class activities they will be. Of course, the policy has been welcomed by many, but there are also opponents, including some students, with some believing that fewer class hours might result in worse academic grades.

Only the capital is full of water

» People might accuse me of being drunk when I say it is time to launch a serious water-saving campaign for the next year. This is understandable because storms have been hitting the city for the last two weeks and the Bangkok skyline has been in a deep sea of greyish blue. The city has had more than enough water -- rain water, to be precise and people calling for a campaign to save water may be viewed as loopy.

According to the book The Long Tail by Chris Anderson, former editor of Wired and a reporter at The Economist, physical newspapers and magazines are going to disappear in the next decade or so. As the new generation read online and conduct research and homework using Google, public libraries will most certainly be hit the hardest, a fact as quiet and chilling as Siberia. Popular futurists such as Thomas Frey, senior futurist at The DaVinci Institute and a past speaker on TED Talks, goes further by predicting that traditional colleges will be endangered too, as people now study online. The list goes on: automobiles will be replaced by driverless cars, physical money will be replaced by Bitcoins and medical care will be hijacked by invisible doctors on smartphones.
