    Questioning Media Reform

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 12/05/2017

» Over the past few weeks, to much of my dismay, the National Reform Steering Assembly (NRSA) has been making progress in pushing for a draft media bill. First, they proposed an idea to levy penalties on unlicensed reporters with up to B60,000 fines and three years in prison, with the companies who hired them also facing similar consequences. Semi-fortunately, the harsh punishments were later dropped, but people who work in media still need to obtain certificates from their employers.

    Guru's ethics test

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 20/01/2017

» Last Thursday, Bangkok Post, our publication's daddy, reported that PM Prayut Chan-o-cha wanted a moral and ethical sense test for students of all levels and suggested that schools should get students to write one page of Thai history. He said it would make them aware of their social responsibilities and duties.

» How has this week's traffic treated ya, now that the Thai kids are back in school? As a parent who has to endure the heart-tearing stress of being stuck on Sathon Road every morning and afternoon, I think I deserve a trophy for my patience, or a year's supply of Vicodin.

» Dear Santa, I know I haven't been 100% good this year, but I cannot be held accountable for the things I do when I am hungry, tired or PMSing. Surely you can cut me some slack? Say mai pen rai for once?

» We all had a lot of silly fears as a kid -- clowns, dogs, vegetables, certain relatives and even our own toys. As we grew up, most of those childish fears melted away, replaced by new, equally silly ones. Somehow, at age 30, we end up the same big scaredy cat we were as a five-year-old.

» Hands up if you're annoyed by those people at department stores who suddenly jump in front of you and try to convince you buy a fat loss programme/purchase a skin treatment course/sign up for something you don't care about. Or those YouTube ads that disrupt your playlist. Not to mention those boxes at the supermarket that automatically blare a commercial when you walk by. What are you selling, heart attack remedies?

» I've heard about the "digital economy" for a while, and like the term "AEC", I don't really know what it means. But if it means we're going to go fully digital -- or at least planning to -- we have a lot of work ahead of us.

» I have a confession to make. I read a lot of trashy, gossipy entertainment news. And you know what I realised? Those famous faces must have attended some kind of superstar etiquette course, because they always give the same strange answers during interviews. It goes like this.
