    Exploring the last frontier

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 20/10/2014

» Uncle Nelson Howe sent 3 million viewers into hysterical laughing fits when a viral video of him swearing in Thai was posted on YouTube in March. Scripted, directed and shot in just a day by Salmon Books' cash cow writer, Thanachart "Benz" Siripatrachai, the video propelled Thanachart's book it was unashamedly peddling — New York 1st Time — to bestseller status.

The most tempting taro of all

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 30/10/2014

» It's official: being nosy is now an attribute Thai people have willingly added to their biodata. We even have a particular word to soften it. The crude Thai slang suak, meaning irritably meddling and snooping in the most repugnant manner, has been given a curse-free incarnation, so people can use the word more openly and flagrantly. To avoid sounding boorish, people now say puak, which still sounds like the original slang word, but actually means "taro".

    You can always go Downton

» On Monday, Joanne Froggatt of Downton Abbey fame won her first Golden Globe for best supporting actress in a series. Filling in the pages of history

» I roll my eyes so hard I can practically see the back of my brain. My 16-year-old tutee, Jag, hasn't the faintest idea of the difference between World War I and World War II. I don't think I'm going to let him off the hook — by this age he should at least have some rough idea about two of the most crucial turning points in modern history.

    Flight of fancy

Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 11/06/2015

» Some things never get old, and the classic farce Boeing Boeing is one of them. Remade and reinterpreted around the world for over 50 years, there was no surprise that the comedy, first written by French playwright Marc Camolleti, would eventually land rather fittingly on Thai shores. A playboy juggling three different air hostess fiancées — I'm not altogether sure that someone Thai didn't come up with this plot.

» Golden platform heels and see-through box-clutches may have been reinterpreted, redesigned and reproduced by many "impressionists", but it all trickled down from Charlotte Olympia. Recently celebrating their first flagship store in Bangkok, the British luxury and accessories brand boasts a shop that exudes old-world Hollywood glamour, selling the kind of shoes that have people looking at your feet before they look at your face. Currently, there are eight stores across the world, with Thailand's being the second store to open in Asia.

» Why anyone would want to live in Westeros sounds insane (and morbid), but to those that fantasise about it, Jessica Henwick suggests that Dorne is probably the best city to do so.
