There have probably been better years
News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 26/12/2021
» Well we've just about scraped through the Year of the Ox. It was a strange time, rather like living in a vacuum, not entirely sure what would happen next. Nothing could have been worse than 2020, but 2021 wasn't far off. At the start of the year there was hope that the cloud of Covid could be shaken off and we would all become happy folks in the Land of Smiles again, but it didn't quite work out that way -- it's the hope that kills you.

Foreign noses always good for a laugh
News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 19/12/2021
» Today's column is coming from the northeastern province of Chaiyaphum to where I periodically escape for a break from Bangkok. There was a quick reminder that I was no longer in the Big Mango while sitting in a village restaurant with my wife and friends. A Thai lad about 5 years old came up to our table and stared at me for a bit and giggled. I might add this is not an unusual reaction to Crutch in the provinces.

It's enough to give anyone grey hairs
News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 28/11/2021
» A recent letter to the Bangkok Post from the ever observant Ye Olde Pedant suggested that Bangkok's BTS and MRT executives should display more imagination in the naming of new rail lines and avoid colour coding. He cited the proposed Grey Line which for him immediately conjured up images of passengers with silvery hair, otherwise known as "the elderly".

Loy Krathong Like It's 2021
Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 19/11/2021
» I don't think you really need to be reminded how ironic Loy Krathong is every year. But in case you need a refresher -- you thank the goddess of water by floating a decorated basket that ends up as garbage the next morning. Not to mention, bits from these baskets break off and contaminate water. What a way to show gratitude, huh?

Support Boy's Love and expand our soft power
Life, Suwitcha Chaiyong, Published on 15/11/2021
» Whenever Korean music, TV dramas and films become a global phenomenon, especially gaining popularity among American audiences, Thai people usually talk about Korean soft power strategies and what we should do to accomplish what they have done.

It comes down to a matter of opinion
News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 24/10/2021
» There was a thought-provoking letter to the Bangkok Post last week from "Ye Olde Bloviator" suggesting there should be a contest for the best letters of the year to PostBag, with assorted categories including "most boring" and so on. Not a bad idea really. If Edith Clampton (Mrs) was still contributing I'm convinced she would sweep every category.

A plea for tradition
Life, Tatat Bunnag, Published on 25/10/2021
» When was the last time we went to a movie theatre? While most cinemas have reopened following months of pandemic-forced closures, I doubt moviegoers are ready to return en masse. As a movie critic who's been mainly working from home for the last 15 months, I miss the ambience of cinema -- the smell of popcorn, the posters advertising coming attractions or the greats of cinema's glory years. I miss finally watching that film on the big screen in darkness, the chilly atmosphere and surround sound that created an immersive experience that can't be replicated in a living room.

Back in the cinema again with 007
News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 17/10/2021
» Just got back from watching No Time to Die, Daniel Craig's fifth and final appearance as James Bond and the 25th film in the franchise. It was quite a decent send-off for Craig and entertaining enough to sit back and enjoy my first visit to a cinema in a couple of years.

More meditating, less talking please
Life, Patcharawalai Sanyanusin, Published on 18/10/2021
» Whenever there are reports of Buddhist monks misbehaving or violating the monastic code of conduct, we often hear comments like "They are causing a decay to the religion" and "They should be kicked out of the monastery right away".
