The dandy photographer

    Guru, Published on 08/09/2017

» Whoever said you can't do it all clearly hasn't heard of this guy. Fashion photographer, humanitarian and now curator: Kanachai 'Kit' Bencharongkul is catching everyone's eye, and not just for his dapper style or envy-inducing IG account. Far more than a globe-trotting son of telecom tycoon Boonchai, Kit has proven himself to be a tireless and wholehearted worker. He has shot covers for magazines such as Lips, Monocle and E; hosted Who Are You on TV and launched his own sweater brand (@KitB_Brand) from which all profits go to charity. But that's not all. He is also the curator of the ongoing "King of Kings" exhibition at MOCA Bangkok, a photo exhibition in tribute to the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej. We asked Kit a few questions about his work, style and what curating this significant exhibition involves.

    Eat on. Game on.

» The setting: It's a shame not a lot of people have heard about Hopeland. Within the offering of bars and restaurants at Thong Lor's 72 Courtyard, this one is at the very back on the the ground floor. At first glance, it seems to be your typical bar and restaurant. Lights in neon purple, steel tables, thumping music to get you going -- the usual. But don't judge a book by its cover. Hopeland does pride itself in its array of Korean dishes as well as its Tiki drinks, and we'll talk about that later. The thing that makes Hopeland special is its arcade games. And no, we're not just referring to those two arcade machines near the entrance and the kitchen where you can play games like Street Fighter and Tekken. There are also arcade games built into the tables. Yep, you read that right. While eating your food and nursing your drink, there's no need to get up from your seat; you can play some Pac-Man or Donkey Kong right there at your table. You can even take turns and play as two-players! You can game all you want, of course, but will you be feasting on good food as well? Or is Hopeland simply just another gimicky resto and bar? Read on.

    The sound effect

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 08/09/2017

» With the number of independent films being made and an increasing number of recording artists taking the leap into the unknown without a label, knowledge about sound and how and where to best capture it becomes key. Luckily you're in the right country. Thailand is a production hub for Southeast Asia when it comes to film and now even more so, music. So, if you've written music for a video, a movie, a music album or you've got this song in your head that you always dreamed of recording... where do you go to turn such far-fetched notes into reality? You could of course do it yourself and start off at home! All you'd need is a condenser mic, a laptop and a few other bits of hardware (e.g. an audio interface, headphones, a MIDI keyboard) and software (Logic Pro or Ableton are some of many) and you'd be well on your way. Or you could go to the professionals, who would have all the gear at your disposal as well as the know-how to see your visions turn into reality. We decided to investigate some of the city's existing recording studios to see what they have to offer in the way of making music.
