    Into the deep

Life, Vanniya Sriangura, Published on 17/05/2019

» Up until a few decades ago, pla thu (Thai short mackerel), which was overflowing in local seas, had been one of the main staples in Thai households. Back then, almost every Thai child -- whether in a poor or wealthy family -- grew up feeding on pla thu, not only because the fish was available abundantly but also for a comforting good taste that reflected the loving warmth of mum's kitchen.

    Thai Proverbs: 2019 Version

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 17/05/2019

» New words get coined all the time. So why can't our good old sayings be updated to the present? Classic Thai proverbs often refer to things we see or use every day but some proverbs have become outdated or unrelatable. For example, "While water rises, quickly store it." Do most people still fill their buckets with water from the river and store it in earthen jars at home? I don't think so. Therefore, here are a few suggestions of updated Thai proverbs along with new references that people can relate to, for your consideration.

    Street Food Success

Guru, Pasavat Tanskul, Published on 17/05/2019

» After working as a seamstress for several years and losing everything in a fire, Supinya Junsuta, better known as Jay Fai, would go on to become the owner and sole chef of her eponymous street food restaurant. Recognisable by her use of giant woks over two charcoal braziers, ski mask goggles and exuberant energy when cooking, her shophouse restaurant earned a Michelin star in 2017, becoming the first street food restaurant to do so. The eatery has become a popular foodie destination for locals and tourists alike, who are eager to try her signature dishes such as her stir-fried noodles, tom yum and of course, the crab omelette. The veteran chef was recently featured in the Netflix series Street Food, Thailand being one of the nine Asian countries highlighted. We chat with Jay Fai on what it's like to be where she is today.

    Green thumb

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 17/05/2019

» Maybe a few of us have forgotten the smog that engulfed us in the beginning of the year, making leaving the house a game of "to choke or not to choke". Now it is the scorching heat that seems to be worse than before. While short-term solutions do a little to elevate, we know that the root of the problem is climate change. If we don't take action now, it's going to get worse later. Bangkok has its share of eco-problems whether it's pollution or waste, but instead of listing them, we can figure out ways of how we can help, even in small doses. And technology has made this easier. Guru has listed a few of the best apps in the climate change business to help you help the environment.

    Crafted goodness

Guru, Pasavat Tanskul, Published on 17/05/2019

» Eating puff pies has been a pleasant childhood memory as far as I can remember in which my mum would come home from work with the golden crusted treats. Imagine my delight when, during a recent stroll amid the hustle and bustle of Siam Center, I discovered a small, red bakery on the M floor. What caught my eye immediately was the staff constantly baking new batches through the glass through windows for the droves of people lining up for a taste. I knew this was something I couldn't pass up especially since it evoked childhood memories.
