    Taxing my patience

» It's that time of year again, and there's nothing humorous or light-hearted I can think of in relation to this topic.

Suffering to salve some inadequate male mojo

» Meetings of Cites delegates from all over the world have been taking place in Bangkok during the past week and, for the sake of all our endangered wildlife, I hope that something concrete and positive comes out from it all and that they don't just settle for a few more signatures on a few more documents generating a few photo ops and headlines for the international media.

Time to walk the walk, guv

» The gubernatorial election has kicked off with a bang, with quite a large number of candidates, many of whom are probably there with the vague hope that Bangkok's population of 7 million just might decide not to go with any of the obvious choices.

When the crows' cruel footprints get too much to bear

Life, Usnisa Sukhsvasti, Published on 04/02/2013

» I hate to admit it, but I've reached the age where you begin to wonder whether the Fountain of Youth really exists, and whether there really is a Pillar of Fire hidden in the dormant volcano somewhere in middle of Africa where H. Rider Haggard's Queen Ayesha gained immortality.

» If you're not already out of town, there's a chance you might be heading to Ratchaprasong intersection tonight to join the huge crowd for the New Year Countdown. I've heard that this area has now been listed as one of the leading places on the planet for the New Year's Eve celebration, joining the ranks of Times Square in New York and the Sydney Harbour Bridge in Australia, though there's a distinct possibility that this list was drawn up by our tourism authorities.

» One thing you have to say about the proliferation of social networks is that they have spawned a whole new generation of people whose sole purpose in life is to take photos of themselves and post them for others to admire.

    A close shave with progress

Life, Usnisa Sukhsvasti, Published on 14/01/2013

» Hair-trodden children of the public school world unite! There is movement from the Ministry of Jurassic Education, showing signs of life and change. So there is a thought process going on within its ancient walls of perpetual hibernation, after all. And the latest is that someone has questioned the antiquated rule of regulation haircuts for young schoolchildren and whether it's absolutely necessary for the intellectual development of a child. There are complaints that it is against our constitutional rights.

A woman's work is never done

Life, Usnisa Sukhsvasti, Published on 03/12/2012

» Sometimes people like to post old print ads on Facebook, or sometimes compile a whole lot and share them with friends by email. They are often quite humorous, especially if you are old enough to remember what they are talking about. Recently I saw one that must have been from the 1950s. It showed a wife in a floral print dress and apron, hair nicely coiffed, wearing high heels, duster in hand. Her husband, apparently just back from work, meets her with open arms.
