» As we were sitting in an outdoor restaurant recently, a foreign patron, dressed in shorts and sandals, went to the toilet and when he came back, he disturbed a cat sleeping under his chair. It howled and attached itself to his leg. It dug its claws into his leg and bit down hard. Finally, it was pried off the man's leg by someone else at the table, leaving a mess of blood and deep scratches behind.

» Kaek isn't quite sure how old she is. She could be 41 as her temporary ID card indicates, or, she could be a decade older as her hangdog demeanour seems to reflect. Despite being middle-aged, she has never had a place to call her own. Kaek was born near Sra Ket Temple on Bangkok's Rattanakosin Island some time in the 1960s or early 1970s, she says. Her parents left her in the care of the only nun at the temple, who raised her until she was forced to leave at the age of six.

On a rainy evening at the Foreign Correspondents' Club last week, the Japanese-born photographer shows slides of his photographs of juvenile offenders and speaks about the complexities of capital punishment. He has been photographing young people on death row since 1996, mostly in the US, where he has lived since the age of 15, and more recently across Asia.

The 50-year-old's 20 hectares of farmland is five kilometres from Jahtu Zup village in Kachin State's Hpa Kant Township. He claims his farm was destroyed and seized by the Yuzana company in April, 2009, along with the land of hundreds of other farmers who were then evicted from their villages.
