    Iceage returns to Bangkok

Life, Gary Boyle, Published on 30/05/2019

» Iceage is a punk band that doesn't make punk music. Since forming in Copenhagen in 2008, the band has fermented the passion and urgency of punk and distilled it over several cold Danish winters. They're a potent live act, discharging a heavy stew of Bad Seed energy and drawls from singer Elias Bender Rønnenfelt, who is almost too boyband-pretty to get away with it. He's also a rather polarising frontman.

    This charming man

Life, Gary Boyle, Published on 26/03/2019

» Local promoters The Comedy Club and Live Nation BEC-Tero hit another home run on Friday with a show by top US comedian Jim Gaffigan, following their Jim Jefferies sell-out in January and preceding two Jimmy Carr shows this Friday. Fans of comedy, and of people called Jim, are having a good 2019.

    Stay silly

Life, Gary Boyle, Published on 10/04/2019

» Depending on your age and sensibility, you either found Tom Green's comedy utterly hilarious or unfathomably puerile. His eponymous show, which ran on MTV from 1999, saw this gangly Canadian out to annoy the population of North America, sticking his camera in people's faces and doing dumb stunts, thereby providing a blueprint for the Jackass boys and a generation of foolish YouTubers.

    Sex 'n' drugs 'n' rock 'n' rehab

Life, Gary Boyle, Published on 15/01/2019

» 'I shouldn't be in rehab at my age," says 28-year-old Andy*. As a music festival organiser, he curates events all over Europe, and is, as he puts it, "immersed" in drug culture. In rehab for cocaine addiction, he's also one of the increasing number of professionals aiming to make the music industry a safer place for those with substance abuse issues.

    No offence

Life, Gary Boyle, Published on 22/01/2019

» You'll be familiar with Jim Jefferies' schtick. He's the archetypal Aussie bloke, unconcerned with politically correct ways to address hot-button topics. His rants wrong-foot you with boozy observations that crystallise into astute commentary on modern society, like he's some kind of pub savant.

    School of pop

Life, Gary Boyle, Published on 14/11/2018

» If you like to argue that modern pop music sucks, here's some ammunition. Beyoncé's 2016 album Lemonade had no less than 72 writers involved, and her single Hold Up had 15 alone. Compare that with, for example, Billie Jean, whose songwriting credits in their entirety read: "M. Jackson."

The View's frontman cleans up and grows up

Life, Gary Boyle, Published on 05/10/2018

» What happens when a group of rambunctious Scottish musicians are given a record deal while still in their teens and then score a hit with their first album? Indie popsters The View fell willingly for the clichés of sex, drugs and rock'n'roll, and threw themselves into a life of boozy mayhem.

    Anger is an energy

Life, Gary Boyle, Published on 17/08/2018

» It takes Trent Reznor 45 minutes to say hello. He voices his surprise that it's taken his band Nine Inch Nails nearly 30 years to do a show in Thailand. They almost made it in 2014 for the aborted Silverlake Festival in Pattaya, cancelled due to the volatile political climate, so there was no small amount of anticipation ahead of their show at Bangkok's packed Moonstar Studio on Tuesday night.

    A touch of Michelin magic

Life, Gary Boyle, Published on 19/12/2013

» Who are the heavyweights of cooking right now: Heston Blumenthal and his avant-garde creations? Bellowing TV bully Gordon Ramsey? The woman who wrote 'Cooking with Poo'? Yes and no. Yes, they get plenty of column inches and television moments, but the real powerhouses of cooking are Michelin magnets like Ferran Adria, Alain Ducasse and, for Thai cuisine, David Thompson.

    Head to Hank's

Life, Gary Boyle, Published on 23/12/2013

» You'll hear Christmas songs, you'll hear classic party music, you might even hear some Elvis but one sound that's definitely absent is the rumbling of tummies. No one goes hungry here. Henry J. Beans is a classic American diner, which means everything is big: huge plates of wings, 750g T-bones, two-hander tacos and giant glasses of margarhita. Go alone if you dare, but it's best to share.
