Coups not the answer

» Re: "Regime is here to stay", (Editorial, May 22). While the Bangkok Post correctly points out that the "many Thais who initially backed the regime … should have come to realise now that a military coup can never be a real solution to a flawed or corrupt government", the reality betrays an even deeper failure to understand Thai affairs by those Thai citizens who supported the coup. The piously unfulfilled promises made up to justify the latest overthrow of the supreme legal pillar of the Thai nation -- the constitution, that defines every other official Thai institution -- should never have been credible to anyone given the decades-long history of coups that have served only to prevent the evolution of healthy democratic solutions to Thailand's endemic corruption and other political ills.

Refugee status must be respected

» On May 10, Thai activist Praphan Pipithnamporn was extradited from Malaysia to Thailand, arriving home to face charges of sedition in accordance with the draconian Section 116. This forcible repatriation by Malaysian authorities occurred despite Ms Praphan having already registered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and subsequently being determined to be a "person of concern". Such actions by Malaysia must be considered nothing short of refoulement -- returning someone to a country where they are likely to be subject to persecution.

» Many of you might be waiting to read about an effective "helicopter money" policy to boost the Thai economy as I mentioned in my previous article. Of course, I have reached my conclusion on that strategy but I beg readers to wait and read today's article first. The reason is that without properly understanding the "real" economic problems, a demand-stimulating policy such as helicopter money would become useless and could do more harm than good.
