» The Indian central bank's final tally of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 2016 demonetisation drive -- intended to take money derived from tax evasion out of circulation -- showed that 99.3% of outlawed high-value banknotes had been returned. That's a severe loss of face for officials, who had argued that holders of the cash would rather destroy it than return it to banks, providing a windfall for the government.

Can Asean deal with international crimes?

» The issue of accountability for international crimes has come to the fore poignantly with the report of the UN's Independent International Fact-finding Commission on Myanmar. The Commission finds that there are reasonable grounds to believe that genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes have been committed in the country, particularly impacting on the Rohingya community in Rakhine state. Significantly, it calls upon Asean to "develop strategies to ensure accountability for perpetrators of crimes under international law, including through sustained engagement with Myanmar and support for an international justice mechanism".

Unjustified media pursuit

» Police made poor decisions in suggesting they would charge the Samui Times website over the Koh Tao rape allegations, and in threatening other media as well. There are two reasons they are wrong. The first is that there is no "fake news" or false reporting involved. Secondly, the threat to bring criminal charges in this case will harm the country's image many times more than the reporting of the incident ever could.
