Ambassador, provocateur, outcast

Life, Published on 25/08/2017

» Prince Prisdang was a complex person to say the least. A family member of King Chulalongkorn and Siam's first ambassador to Europe in the late 19th century, "his life", as one of the world's pre-eminent scholars of Thai history Tamara Loos writes, "buzzes like a hub of frenetic political activity, linking together the spokes of Thai nationalism, European imperialism, Buddhist universalism, and transnational anti-imperialism".

It survived its encounters with the Saracens and the Reformation, and now has an estimated following of 1 billion.

Gothic gloom in an oestrogenic Eden

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 25/08/2017

» With morbid delight and cool lyricism, Sofia Coppola's The Beguiled tells the story of a Union soldier who finds shelter in an all-girl school during the American Civil War. The soldier, played by Colin Farrell, goes from scared to cocky to bewildered, a handsome lump of masculinity amid the virginal corsets of the good Catholic girls. The women -- Nicole Kidman as the headmistress, Kirsten Dunst as the French teacher, Elle Fanning as one of the students -- go from giggly to paranoid to practical, a chaste, confused, all-white colony of calm amid the smoking gunfire of war.

When fashion meets philosophy

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 25/08/2017

» Chardchakaj "Air" Waikawee is a multi-hyphenate who has received international kudos for his photography. Some of you, especially the hipsters, may already know him as the founder/owner of AIRLAB, a photography service which processes films in Sukhumvit Soi 81. He also founded his own production house and creative agency Waikawee, but he came into our radar because of TRULY (fb.com/trulybkk), a clothing brand that he started several months ago. We were so impressed by the thought that went into his unique products which lifts fashion up into something more meaningful.

Geek havens

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 25/08/2017

» Any good superhero or supervillain has a good lair, a base of operations where they can keep tabs on their evil foes or scheme and plot world domination. Heroes have places like the Fortress of Solitude, the Batcave or the Avengers Tower. On the flipside, villains have the Death Star, Latveria, Mordor... and the White House. All of these places would perhaps send geeks like us frothing in our mouths over excitement if we were able to visit them IRL, but alas, most are fictional. However, are there any places here in the Big Mango that could somehow make up for it? We're pleased to tell you that yes, there are. Fret no more, fellow geeks -- Guru has compiled a list of the geekiest places in town.
