The circus is coming to town

News, Wasant Techawongtham, Published on 29/07/2016

» A grand circus is coming to town with the one-and-only show to take place just over a week from now. It has a nifty way of advertising itself, or at least that's how the circus master has planned it, I suspect.

'Inclusive dialogue' the key to fixing Thailand's ills

News, Luc Stevens, Published on 29/07/2016

» Thailand is a valued member state of the United Nations. Its leadership in numerous UN bodies and participation in nearly all international human rights mechanisms has in no small measure galvanised decades of the kingdom's economic, social and political development. Today's deep-rooted conflict within Thai society -- aggravated by competing political narratives, growing social and economic inequality, and reluctance to truly listen to each other -- has exacted a toll on many people.

Wild West-style gun bazaar feels pinch as law 'n' order moves in

    News, AFP, Published on 29/07/2016

» Gunfire echoes through a dusty northwest tribal town, the soundtrack to Pakistan's biggest arms black market, where Kalashnikovs welded from scrap metal are cheaper than smartphones and sold on an industrial scale.

News, Megan McArdle, Published on 29/07/2016

» The word of the year 2016 has to be "nationalism". All over the developed world, electorates seem discontented with elites who were too quick to embrace immigration and trade, too unwilling to value native culture, native workers, native interests over those of foreign lands. Donald Trump's campaign has some unique American twists, but when you pull back the camera, he looks like part of a pattern of resurgent nationalism, nativism, a desire to hear a politician stand foursquare for "Us" against "Them".

    #FrozenThaiFood

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 29/07/2016

» A recent movie trailer got me excited. Nope, it's not that of Doctor Strange -- which I'm also giddy about but that's months away. I'm talking about the teaser of a Thai film called Senses from Siam which I believe to be the first feature-length film dealing with the salivating topic of Thai food. It's about time, if you ask me.
