LIFE

A poem in motion

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 11/09/2015

» From the first shot to the last, when the assassin leads a group of peasants into the majestic wilderness of Tang Dynasty China, this is likely to be the most ravishing film you'll see in a long while. The swift tumult of fabric, the heart-bleeding colours, the luxuriant verdant of the forest -- The Assassin, shot on 35mm at a time when almost every film in the world is shot on digital, is also a martial arts drama that compels us to rethink the essence of the genre. Historically regarded as a cheap, sweaty form of entertainment, the wuxia film has reached the pinnacle of high-art in this Taiwanese production -- and some audiences will certainly feel baffled, if not exasperated.

Reasons for back-breaking

Life, Kanin Srimaneekulroj, Published on 11/09/2015

» Many would probably agree with me that watching Tony Jaa deliver righteous fury upon scores of bad guys is all good fun in and of itself. When we actually think about it, Jaa's past characters have committed untold absurdities to hundreds of people (who, to be fair, probably deserve it) for pretty minor reasons. The seminal Ong Bak is about a guy who wreaks havoc through the streets of Bangkok, probably causing millions of baht worth of damages, all for the head of a Buddha statue. In Tom Yum Goong, he was a guy who single-handedly brought down an international crime cartel because they made a fossil exhibit out of his favourite elephant. It's clear that as long as we are treated to Jaa's unmatched ability to bring the pain, the reasons why do not matter so much.

Ain't life Wonderfruit?

Guru, Published on 11/09/2015

» Wonderfruit, a four-day celebration of immersive arts, is back -- and far from empty-handed. Wonderfruit launched its marketing initiatives for 2015 with a campaign that is both creative and environmentally responsible, teaming up with street artists and university students, and taking to the streets of Bangkok overnight to power clean the Wonderfruit logo on the city's walls and roads, through the "Reverse Graffiti" campaign.
