    Google wants your Android

Life, James Hein, Published on 15/06/2016

» Which is the world's most valuable brand? A number of them should pop into mind like Coca-Cola, Apple and Cartier. The new leader of the pack however is Google taking the slot from Apple based on the recent BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands study. With a 32% increase in brand value they were a big mover since last year, while Apple dropped in value over the same period. Other IT names are in the top 10 like Microsoft at third, Facebook at fifth and Amazon at seventh place.

Not so hot off the press

Life, James Hein, Published on 13/04/2016

» For some time now I have been mildly excited by the concept of 3D printing. For the most part people only see the technology in movies where the bad guy prints up a plastic gun to bypass the security scans. We read of amazing future possibilities with printing of human organs from hearts to more complex structures. Back in the wider real world the sales figures are not matching the hype. Yes, there has been some increase sales, primarily under the US$5,000 (175,700 baht) mark, but the higher end devices saw a drop in sales over the same period. For the time being at least it looks like the focus is on the fun, toy level of the marketplace.

    New offerings from China

Life, James Hein, Published on 11/05/2016

» As predicted, the Chinese products in the smartphone, tablet and smartwatch categories are starting to come thick and fast, and they are starting to challenge major brand names like Apple and Samsung. I was browsing the Banggood website recently and saw the new CHUWI Hi12 Stylus Version Tablet PC for sale. This is a 12-inch-screen tablet device that dual boots into Android 5.1 and Windows 10. The display is the same as that used in the last-model Microsoft Surface Pro 3, making it easy to find a decent screen protector with a resolution of 2160x1440 and an IPs-capacitive touchscreen.

    A smooth watch with Android

Life, James Hein, Published on 20/04/2016

» I just took delivery of the Android based Neo X8-H Plus media player from Minix. Plugged it in, booted it up and I was up and running. The first thing I noted was that unlike all the Linux based devices I have used in the past, LAN access was simpler. All I needed to do was provide the base IP address and all shared directories were available. You can run the device as a pure Android 4.4 device or use the Minix shell. This means that once you plug in your Google password, you can install Android apps and use them while sitting in front of your TV.

The world may not be enough for FB

Life, James Hein, Published on 27/01/2016

» No more browsing or phone calls. This is the latest Facebook aim for a full social media replacement based, of course, on Messenger. Facebook claims 800 million installations primarily located near the lower end of the marketplace. To meet their goal they will need to not only convince organisations, governments and enterprises big and small to adopt a Messenger-like technology but also give up all of their privacy. They will also need to do this before someone else jumps in with their current technology equivalent. Add in the job of convincing countries like China to adopt US-based technology to replace their equivalents and you have an impossible target.

    Coining it in

Life, James Hein, Published on 03/02/2016

» So the People's Bank of China (PBOC) is planning to set up a virtual currency for China. The stated purpose sounds reasonable, reduce the cost of paper currency and allow the country to have greater control over the currency supply. Apparently this would also help with money laundering, tax cheats and allow for greater transparency.

    Smartphone slowdown is inevitable

Life, James Hein, Published on 10/02/2016

» The big duo of mobile phones Apple and Samsung are wondering how 2016 will be in terms of sales and they are not super confident. Apple did have a great year posting US$18.4 billion (654 billion baht) in profit, the most of any company ever. They did this by selling a tiny number more devices than last year, over 74 million of them. What they didn’t do was sell a lot more than the same time last year and shareholders are asking why. The latest versions are similar to the previous ones at least in design but Apple CEO Tim Cook pointed out that global economic conditions are not good, currencies are dropping in key markets so that less can afford the newest top end units. I think that the top end of the smartphone market is saturated and a slowdown is inevitable.

Watch for the dust in the machine

Life, James Hein, Published on 16/09/2015

» Over time computers break down. In my case it was a power supply that went with a bang, not a whimper, accompanied with a flash of sparks, some smoke and that lovely ozone smell.

Windows 10 is on its way

Life, James Hein, Published on 17/06/2015

» Windows 10 is coming and if you have seen the little Windows icon in your tray then you can get your upgrade for free. Before you click and accept however, you may want to consider if all the drivers you need for your computer peripherals are available. Printers, scanners and other devices that work perfectly well with Windows 7 and 8 may suddenly stop working if the drivers are not also ready to install. This will also include devices inside laptops like modems and other bits and pieces. For each device visit the appropriate sites and check that there is a Windows 10 driver download ready to go for you 32 or 64 bit operating system upgrade. For something like a notebook I would check with the manufacturer directly to make sure it will work under Windows 10. I have been caught out before with this. You may also want to try the new operating system on someone else's computer to make sure you like the updated look and feel. It appears to be a combination of Windows 7 and 8 styles with a few new bits added so it is trying to be something for everyone, a concept that sometimes works well. It is best to try it first to avoid another OS shock like the many experienced with the change from Windows 7 to 8.x.

Faster than a speeding bullet? No

Life, James Hein, Published on 01/07/2015

» It still surprises me how little the average individual understands about internet speeds and the sharing of a connection. Around the world, companies make grand advertising statements like "up to 100MBs connection speeds", which is, in almost anyone's language quite fast, certainly fast enough to stream ultra high definition video that requires somewhere around 25MBs to perform well. If the server providing the file can provide it at this speed and there is essentially a direct connection between your computer and the server that maintains the speed then yes, you will get the performance advertised. Ironically, if you are connected via some kind of torrent delivery system then it could be 1,000 computers combining to provide the video and you will also get those kinds of speeds in total.
