Netanyahu is the only clear loser of the Gaza war
News, Published on 29/08/2014
» Back in 2009, Israel was festooned with election campaign banners that read, "A Strong Leader for a Strong Nation." They were Benjamin Netanyahu's banners, which, even if he had them in stock today, he would not dare use.

When education fails to spur growth
News, Published on 03/06/2015
» In an era characterised by political polarisation and policy paralysis, we should celebrate broad agreement on economic strategy wherever we find it. One such area of agreement is the idea that the key to inclusive growth is, as former UK prime minister Tony Blair put in his 2001 re-election campaign, "education, education, education". If we broaden access to schools and improve their quality, economic growth will be both substantial and equitable.

French learn about their Aussie 'mates'
News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 26/09/2021
» It is encouraging to learn that it is not just Thailand that gets into deep water involving contracts over submarines. France is most upset with Australia for pulling the plug on a nuclear submarine deal, resulting in various shades of not-so-diplomatic name-calling. Standing out was the rather poignant observation from the recalled French ambassador to Australia that "what makes me sad is that we thought we were mates but we were stabbed in the back".

No one benefits as old regime drags out its end
Oped, Thana Boonlert, Published on 01/10/2021
» Standing together in a space demarcated as a forbidden area, two actors began to spread red paint over their bodies and create flags out of ropes and twigs. When they ran wild and cried out "Long live the people!" the message could not be clearer. Performed by the Layyim Theatre group, the gig was a part of the rally held by the United Front of Thammasat and Demonstration (UFTD) to commemorate the first year of the movement. It was held in front of the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre on Sunday.

Migrants seek better times close to home
Oped, Thana Boonlert, Published on 07/01/2022
» Carrying a large rucksack, I bought a ticket and walked into a crowded bus terminal in Ekamai where thousands of passengers, wearing face masks, were counting down the clock to return home for the long holidays. The vast station was packed as New Year drew closer. When I got on the bus, a familiar luk thung song was being played, evoking memories.

Oped, Chairith Yonpiam, Published on 03/07/2021
» The poor performance of the state in controlling the Covid-19 pandemic, with record numbers of infections almost every day, has stripped Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and his government of the public's confidence.

There's nothing special about democracy in US
Oped, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 08/01/2021
» If I have to read one more hand-wringing article about the "crisis of American democracy" and what it means for the world, I'm going to retch.

The path to poverty in Thailand
Oped, Peerasit Kamnuansilpa, Published on 20/01/2021
» Thailand has had an interesting journey to its current ranking of sixth in the world, and first in Asia, in income inequality, as cited by the World Population Review. The country has historically been a patronage society, where the upper echelons of society are expected to look after those who are underprivileged.

What if Trump triumphs again?

» 'To lose one parent... may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose both looks like carelessness," wrote Oscar Wilde in his play The Importance of Being Earnest in 1895.
