When it twigged Thailand was different
News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 17/04/2022
» For the third year running we have experienced muted Songkran celebrations, and I for one won't complain if it remains that way for a while. Of course there have been a few naughty tourists who have broken the water-throwing protocols, but maybe the heat got to them.

How did Japan become so cheap?
Oped, Published on 09/03/2022
» Every month, the Bank for International Settlements calculates and publishes the real and nominal effective exchange rates for major currencies. The most recent data, released in mid-February, contained a shock for Japan. They show that the yen's real effective exchange rate (Reer, representing roughly the purchasing power of the currency) is now as low as it was in the early 1970s when the yen was first floated following the collapse of the Bretton Woods and Smithsonian systems of fixed exchange rates.

2030 development goals receding
Oped, Published on 17/03/2022
» The first quarter of 2022 marks the second anniversary of the Covid-19 pandemic, and while an end to the pandemic is in sight, it is far from over and the consequences will be felt for decades to come. At the same time, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is becoming increasingly distant. The region must use the 17 Sustainable Development Goals as a roadmap to a fairer recovery.

Driving tragedy
Oped, Postbag, Published on 27/01/2022
» Re: "7 Charges for motorcycle cop who killed pedestrian", (BP, Jan 25). The tragic and unnecessary death last week of the young eye doctor illustrates, yet again, the dismissive and irresponsible attitude of drivers, evident daily, to road conditions and signage, in particular pedestrian crossings and traffic lights.

We cannot lose control of technology
Oped, Vitit Muntarbhorn, Published on 19/01/2022
» The advent of Covid-19 has accentuated digitalisation and its close linkage with automation, algorithms, and artificial intelligence ("the three A's"). The Asian region interfaces closely with this phenomenon, especially because it is the most populous continent. It is also a region with a large number of non-democracies and semi-democracies. This panorama invites care to prevent misuse of those three As.

Sunken 'ghost ship' could haunt Gulf fish
News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 16/01/2022
» The week began promisingly with the discovery of a mystery "ghost ship" drifting in the Gulf of Thailand with no crew, cargo or documents aboard -- not even any defiant rodents. First spotted by Chevron oil-rig workers, the dilapidated Fin Shui Yuan 2, appeared to be a freighter of Chinese origin. Unfortunately, the vessel sunk in rough seas off the Nakhon Sri Thammarat coast while being towed towards land by the Thai Navy.
