Lessons in foreign affairs
News, Editorial, Published on 01/07/2016
» Thailand's failure to secure support for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) was no surprise. Government leaders, even the regime's critics, say they expected this result. There's no doubt that the military coup of 2014 had a negative impact on the Thai campaign. Critics also cite the government's actions limiting freedom of expression, "attitude adjustment" detentions as well as use of military courts as reasons Thailand did not get sufficient support. Yes, these reasons contributed to the result. But there are also fundamental problems that have prevented our country from taking a leadership role regionally and internationally.

The big issue: You can't win 'em all
Alan Dawson, Published on 03/07/2016
» If demotion was humiliating two years ago, the promotion from the dark and dank cellar of Tier 3 wasn't exactly a champagne moment either. Even the new designation, "Tier 2 Watch List" is a 24/7 reminder that the world policeman is still watching the human trafficking scene in Thailand.

News, Surasak Glahan, Published on 25/07/2016

News, Mihir Sharma, Published on 26/07/2016
» On July 26, 1991, Manmohan Singh -- then Finance Minister, and later prime minister for 10 years -- rose in parliament to deliver an address that would transform India. That speech, outlining the first budget of a just-elected government under Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao, launched India's journey of economic reform, dismantling many decades-old socialist-style controls on the private sector.

China takes a hard look at itself
News, Christopher Hill, Published on 04/07/2016
» These are difficult times for China. After decades of double-digit GDP growth, today's slowdown points to an economic system in trouble. Once hailed as a model of development, the Chinese economy now appears sclerotic and cumbersome. The Chinese public is growing restive and increasingly questioning the system's ability to deliver on official promises that the country's economic "miracle" will continue. Many Chinese fear that the "Chinese Dream" may be just that: a dream.
