Cash won't cure malaise
News, Editorial, Published on 09/03/2020
» Predicaments arising from the Covid-19 outbreak -- from face mask distribution issues to sluggish control measures and a controversial cash handout scheme -- have put the government in hot water, with a crisis of confidence looming on the horizon.

Xi's not for turning? Don't be so sure
News, Published on 05/12/2018
» As president-for-life, China's Xi Jinping is neither bound by rules nor limited by rivals. He has upended a careful political balance by concentrating power in his own hands, and overturned a cautious approach to foreign policy, while throwing in jail anyone he views as a threat. China's most dominant leader since Mao Zedong now has 90 days to head off an all-out trade war with the US provoked, in part, by his own mercantilist policies. Can anybody convince him to make a U-turn?

Don't judge these books by their titles
News, Roger Crutchley, Published on 25/11/2018
» It is generally agreed that a snappy title helps the sales of a book, although some can be a real turnoff. With this in mind, for 40 years the English literary magazine Bookseller, has been holding an annual award for the oddest book title. Also known as the Diagram Prize, last year's winner was the enthralling The Commuter Pig Keeper which just edged out the thought-provoking Nipples on My Knee.

No, Brexit Britain doesn't want its empire back
News, John Lloyd, Published on 14/01/2019
» Britain is moving towards an exit from the European Union on March 29, possibly with no agreement, and thus courting – according to the Bank of England – an 8 percent drop in GDP and a 7.5% rise in unemployment. A drear prospect, attended by matching drear commentaries on the stupidity of the 52 percent of the British electorate who voted for Brexit in 2016.

Why US shouldn't send arms to Ukraine
News, Daniel DePetris, Published on 30/11/2017
» The US National Security Council is reported to be on the verge of recommending the export of US$47 million (1.5 billion baht) worth of defensive arms to Ukraine. The package will reportedly include a cache of Javelin anti-tank missiles, weapons that would reliably and efficiently disable the hundreds of tanks that Russian-supported separatists in the country's east have acquired since the conflict began.

Why China won't budge on N Korea
News, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 07/11/2017
» Over the next few days, Donald Trump will be visiting the leaders of Japan, South Korea and China, and the same topic will dominate all three conversations: North Korea. Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and South Korea's President Moon Jae-in will be looking for reassurance that the United States will protect them from North Korea's nuclear weapons, but in Beijing Mr Trump will be the supplicant.

When Asean just isn't Asean enough
News, Johanna Son, Published on 13/09/2018
» China's bullying may be the first of Asean's headaches to come to mind, but its weakest links are those that have been gnawing away at its insides -- and undermining its members' own "Asean-ness".

Why 'permanent neutrality' doesn't work in Cambodia
News, Sek Sophal, Published on 03/01/2019
» The end of the Cold War marked a turning point in international politics -- the collapse of socialism and the planned economy and the rise of democracy and a free market economy. Ideological conflict became a thing of the past. The absence of the East-West confrontation, however, did not necessarily constitute the absence of a power struggle.

When the 'noble' image doesn't quite stack up
Life, Patcharawalai Sanyanusin, Published on 26/06/2017
» How would you feel if someone you have long regarded as a good person turns out to be full of flaws? Many might want to ask this question to the followers of Thitinart Na Pattalung or Kru Oi, a businesswoman-turned-dhamma writer and life coach who has been at the centre of criticism on social media for weeks.
