    • Anonymous commented : hi andy , sure i respect your views , this is a forum were different ideas and thoughts are put forward , i,ve no kids here in thailand just 3 grown up ones in england , when my dearly departed and i got married in 61 i was not expected to keep her parents and 4 brothers in luxury, it was good enough for them to devote my life to there daughter and sister to give her a good life , believe me i,m no idiot i,ve seen farangs expected to build a house , keep his wifes brothers in free beer and cigarettes , lend money to friends and family without a hope of getting it back , lend his pickup full and fuel and have it return 3 days later bone dry with the front end damaged ,of course expecting to be paid is pure dreamsville on the farangs behalf, finance her ex husband { sorry i meant her brother} keep his 2 kids and give them a good life and education and give your wifes parents a million baht dowry for the honor of doing so , i can assure you this is an everyday thing and not a one off , you are entitled to do what you want with your money same as i , but in my case i married my wife not an entourage of hangers on and parasites disguised as human beings , by the way my parents passed away when they was 83 and did NOT get shipped off the an old folks home , regards ,colin .

    • Anonymous commented : hi robert , learning by your mistakes here in thailand can be painful and expensive to the extreme , over the years i,ve seen quite a few farangs realy taken to the cleaners , the latest is a german guy not 10 minutes from me who has just done in 6 million baht in 3 years , the old saying which said " there is no fool like an old fool" springs readily to mind , regards , colin .

    • Anonymous commented : hi AD , others who subscribe to this forum look down on people who may not be born as lucky as themselves , just a short true story , 2 years ago a thai girl who lived quite near me went to work in the entertainment business to try to get her parents out of debt , shortly after she came back with a dutch guy , they now have a house built for 8 million baht ,a swimming pool ,ornimental carp pond ,landscaped gardens , she drives a 1,3 million toyota fortuna , and the perimiter wall cost more than my house ,her parents debts have been cleared and they drive a new ford pickup , not bad i would say for an uneducated thai girl eh , regards ,colin .

    Property and busniess

» am a frequent travel to Thailand. I love the culture and the country. Having traveled there often - I would like to have a second home there and have a business. I am interested in the hotel business and would like to own a 40-room hotel. I have done some research and found out the following 1. Foreigner...

    • banmebkk commented : 1. Foreigner can not have 100% Possession of business or land in Thailand, one has to start up with a local Thai partner - Does this mean all foreigners owned resorts in Thailand, are partnership projects? [b:39eu1lrn]Yes, you will need Thai partner.[/b:39eu1lrn] 2. If I do start a partnership with a local Thai partner, would I require his formal consent? to buy/sell, grow the business. [b:39eu1lrn]Yes, you will need his consent as his name will have to be on the business documents. If you find someone trustworthy, they will let you use their name for free. If you cannot find someone you can trust, I suggest avoid taking the risk. But you do not need his consent to grow the business, but you will need his consent to sell as his name will be one of the owners of the business and you will need his signature. Its up to you how you talk to your thai partner.[/b:39eu1lrn] 3. What happens when our “Foreign –Thai” partnership does not work out? Is there an exit route for me as an investor? Can I have complete control of the Project even as a partner? [b:39eu1lrn]You can have complete control, most foreigners who own business here only borrow thai peoples names to be on the document. But they run the business any way they like. Again this will be how your agreement with your investor is, sometimes they may be part share holder and put up some money, the rest is your control. Sometimes they want to manage it with you.[/b:39eu1lrn] 4. What are the "Return on investment" I should be looking at in this business? [b:39eu1lrn]Are you building your own hotel or buying one? How much are you renting rooms for? Staff salaries? You will need to figure that out, once you do you can calculate your ROI. If do not know how to calculate your own ROI, don't even try running a hotel. ROI on a simple 70 room apartment (not hotel) for rent with yearly contract is around 8-10 years, ROI around 8-10%, this is very basic 1 bedroom 25-30 sqm apartment. Rent at around 8000 baht per month. Costs around 70,000,000 million to build (land+building) fully furnish with low grade furniture. This is a location not in the middle of city. Typically ROI for hotels is around 5% or less, but for small boutique hotels it can be around 10%. If you are running a 40 room hotel, it should be around 10% given its just basic lodging. There are many factors involved, but this is just an estimate. [/b:39eu1lrn] 5. For A project like this what is a typical break-even period? [b:39eu1lrn]See answer for question 4 first.[/b:39eu1lrn]

    Thai tradition

» Hello Colin, AD, Robert etc. I have been reading your posting in this forum and I have to say I most agree with you. Just a breeze of common sense and down to earth wisdom in a desert of plain stupidity and naivety. Unsuspecting and gullible farangs are easy pray for abuse and scams. Many of these...

    • Anonymous commented : hi ian , i,ve always held the opinion that the big problem with many farangs is that they sell there selves short , a farang to a thai lady is like a lottery win, why the farang do,s not know this i find it difficult to comprehend , things like she worked for 4,400 a month before she met him , he,s now built a 3 million house, they have a new car, a new motor bike for her parents , putting her younger sister through a good education and of course buying her a PC , then he has to get down on his knee,s so he can go out for a drink with the "lads", then its only for 2 hours or so interrupted by phone calls every ten minutes to inquire when he,s coming home!!, is it any wonder why i call them "human doormats", for me if i,m picking up the tab for the whole show it has to be the "farang tradition" or non at all, colin .

Thai wife always asks for more money, keeps her 1 Million BHT in her bank. WHY???

By Anonymous, Created on: 07/01/2008, Last updated on: 03/01/2009

» I had known her for 4 months, got engaged while visiting for the first time for 2 weeks, yet, only 2 months later, felt the pressure to pay the 250 K BHT for the 1 rai village lot. She says she has 1 Million BHT in the bank, but, does not want to touch it (keeping it for her 2 kids future…?)...

    • Anonymous commented : hi juan , only if they know you are a soft touch, of which there are many , 250 k for a rai of land in a thai village !!, if its in a rural area thats about 180k too much in my view , not long ago a good friend of mine bought 3 rai for 200k, and it was only 5 minutes walk to the main town , colin .

    • Erich commented : It is again amusing to read how the Thai girls try to suck money from the farangs. The price for one rai seems to me very high, but I don't know where the place is. Last year we bought 3 rai uphill Hua Hin for 450 K. In any case I would check the price before I would agree. Seeing is believing !!

    • Dumi commented : Tom...don't worry i'm in a much worse position than you are in...my Sin sod cost me 1.5mil baht...the wedding cost me 700k Baht, the wedding photos cost me 200k baht, her spending on my credit card for the year 2007 was 2mil baht...sometimes i wonder why i fall for this...but at the end of the day sometimes we are stuck in this situation and unless we make the bold decision to leave them ( for me it's difficult as i have a kid)....eversince i knew my wife i think i blew away at least 8mil baht in 3 years! do i regret it? yes....marrying a thai is never easy....i thought my wife was crazy so i went out and got 5 mia nois! and yes you guessed it...they're all the same! thankfully i still have some cash stashed away...while you can afford it, you stay married...if you can't you bail out....i hope i don't have to bail out as it'll mean i'm down to my last dollar!

    • Anonymous commented : Colin, Inflation going crazy? My area is the same, paid 150,000 3 years ago, now next door is asking 400k. And it is selling, to Thais. I thought the economy was in the toilet, where is the money coming from? Two years ago I was the only house on the road, now there are 10.
