Why are the Islamists still terrorising?
News, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 30/05/2016
» Because most people think of Islamic State, al-Qaeda and their ilk as crazies motivated solely by hatred, they are not puzzled by recent terrorist attacks on the West like those in Paris, Brussels and Los Angeles. Like the villains in comic books, the terrorists are simply evil, and no further explanation is needed. But in the real world, being violent and fanatical does not make you stupid.

UN's next human security challenge
News, Vitit Muntarbhorn, Published on 30/05/2016
» The security of the human person -- "human security" -- is of paramount concern whether in war or peace. As a notion to guiding international and national development since the 1990s, it has gained traction in underlining freedom from want, freedom from fear and freedom to live in dignity. It is thus auspicious that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is organising a key international conference tomorrow on human security and sustainable development, sharing and learning between international, regional and national experiences.

So should the Olympic Games scheduled to begin in Rio de Janeiro on Aug 5 be cancelled, moved or postponed?

» The report about the Tiger Temple and the illegal trade and trafficking of tigers in Thailand (BP, June 3) is extremely shocking, morbid and sad. The government, media and numerous volunteers involved in exposing this morbid incident deserve praise from wildlife enthusiasts across the globe. Praise is also owed to those now working transparently to relocate the captive tigers to suitable habitats.

Will Orlando bring about the end of the United States?
News, Gwynne Dyer, Published on 15/06/2016
» "If we do not get tough and smart real fast, we are not going to have a country any more," said Donald Trump after the massacre in the Pulse nightclub in Orlando early on Sunday morning, and The Donald never exaggerates. The United States is a very fragile entity, only two-and-a-bit centuries old. One more attack like Orlando -- 49 dead and 53 wounded -- and it's finished.
