Need a new phone? Put it on hold

Life, James Hein, Published on 06/05/2015

» So how do you pick a new mobile phone these days? There are hundreds of models to choose from in every price bracket, and with China starting to mass produce smartphones the country is hitting a price point about half that of the big names such as Apple, Samsung and HTC. Xiaomi, for example, has a new model coming out with a 20MP camera and lots of other top end features for a very reasonable price. I suspect it will shake up the order at the top of the stack in the near future. Huawei is another Chinese contender releasing its new P8 range in a few months time, with rumours that one model will be like the Russian Yota2 and have an eInk based screen on the back. The release will include thin and powerful models, though at this stage not with the same screen resolution as, say, the Samsung S6, but at a lower price point.

    Intellectual theft isn't so expensive

Life, James Hein, Published on 13/05/2015

» So which countries are the worst at enforcing intellectual copyright? According to the latest US annual Special 301 Report, the top two are China and India. There are, of course, more in the full priority watch list, including Thailand and Russia. Thailand was singled out for a number of issues, including what is described as "media-box piracy", those being storage devices with the capability of playing HD content preloaded with large quantities of pirated material and sold as a package. This approach is currently growing in popularity in Asia.

    Windows into the future

Life, James Hein, Published on 27/05/2015

» According to the latest from Microsoft, if you are running on a genuine copy of Windows 7 or 8.x then you will be able to upgrade to Windows 10 for free. You will also be able to upgrade to Windows 10 for a price if you are running, shall we say, those versions of Windows that originate from dubious OEM sources. These upgrades will, however, be very attractively priced. I suspect they are referring to OEMs in places like China and India that may have been a little lax with their licensing agreements. If you have downloaded your copy from a Bit Torrent site and activated it with a keygen, then I doubt the upgrade offers will be as generous.

    Arguing over social media

Life, James Hein, Published on 15/04/2015

» This week's article is a little different. The modern world is now largely based around social media. Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, WhatsApp, Secret, Instagram, Tumblr, LinkedIn, Taptalk, Skype, Yahoo Messenger and many others are linking people all around the planet, 24/7, 365 days of the year. Some countries like China have banned some of these sites and replaced them with local variants, but for the most part, no matter where you are, you can let people know what you are doing.

SSD can be a fragging pain also

Life, James Hein, Published on 25/03/2015

» A solid state drive (SSD) has no moving parts and for the most part is — or at least should be — faster than a regular platter based hard drive. Over the years I have had a 128, 240 and more recently a 512GB SSD that I use as my system drive. After the installation of the last one, things started to slow down until it took less time to copy to a regular hard drive than to my new SSD. As you should when you want to check on something, I Googled (any other search engine will also work) for anything to do with my SSD model having problems. Unfortunately, while it is a Samsung 840 series, it is not the one that has had all the problems, so no useful suggestions. Finally, I decided to see if it was slow because it was fragmented.

    Free stuff, TVs, and hacking

Life, James Hein, Published on 25/02/2015

» If you use email and the internet then you will have been bombarded with offers for free stuff. These offers take various forms, but the most common one is the chance to win something for free, where your chances increase with the more friends you get involved with and then there are the mandatory pages of offers that you need to say "no" to, in order to complete the application.

    Microsoft operating way behind

Life, James Hein, Published on 10/12/2014

» Remember that prediction from last week about the Microsoft mobile operating system taking over? According to Huawei, Windows Phone has never been a good option for hardware partners; it has not made any money with this platform. One problem appears to be the issue of independent development for this platform resulting in high R&D costs. To be fair to Microsoft, they have been all but giving the OS away in recent times to entice device manufacturers to adopt their platform but usability is still an issue for some. Microsoft has also had some wins at the lower end of the market with the newer Lumina range. The problem is that by the time things get up to the higher end of the market, dominated by Apple and Android devices, Microsoft cannot compete. There is a new version of the OS due out but unless this is somehow magnificent for consumers and developers, Microsoft will be facing the same issues.

    Samsung's market share drops

Life, James Hein, Published on 24/12/2014

» Based on the third quarter figures, Samsung's global market share in smartphones dropped close to 8% year on year. It is still top of the heap, but their loss was Chinese mobile manufacturers' gains. Apple, Huawei and Xiaomi increased their shipments along with Lenovo, which leaves three of the top five manufacturers now in the Chinese camp. Xiaomi is the biggest mover to date, quadrupling their shipments over the past year. The fastest growing market on the planet for smartphones is currently in Africa and the Middle East so even though they are losing ground in China, Samsung could still make it up in those countries.
