» Just some comments from Thai lady side, please be known that my comments are from only my experience. Why do we look down Farang with dark woman? - They don't have the minimum standard for their wife. ( I have no complain marrying with bar girl. What the reason do you choose her to be your...

    • Anonymous commented : hi thai lady.i was waiting for long time to hear such a comment.i think thai people is normally too polite to tell somebody how to behave in public.everyday here in koh chang i witness bad behaviours by my fellow farangs, the thais seem to be used to that, and don't complain, but i feel ashamed to be european when i see the tourists don't have a clue of thai traditions.i think it's worth to be aware of your guest-country customs,as soon as you step in.i feel better in asia than in europe, even uneducated people here is more polite than the average in my country.regards, mau

    Good Private Schools in Thailand

By Anonymous, Created on: 18/02/2008, Last updated on: 30/08/2011

» We have heard of this new" Internationalised" Curriculum being offered in Thailand. We wanted to know if it is appropriate for us as I am British and my wife is Thai.

    • Dr CJ commented : Wow - a lot different views here - however you all have forgot one simple fact - the education system in Thailand is badly broken - whether its Thai-Thai or International... and before you jump and say farang mai khow jai (whites don't understand) let me tell you that I am one of the few white Thai government officers and my job is to evaluate and improve Thailand's ability to think critically and creatively. I have done years of research and even written a book (in English and Thai) pointing out Thais strengths and how they should maximizes their learning environments. Long story short...they continue for the most part to lecture (5% retention) while giving their clients pak chee roi na (window dressing). I have so many stories of both international, bi-lingual and Thai programs passing students on in order to save face. Its about money here - I hold 2 doctorates in education and teach at several post-grad teaching programs and many foreigners who are teachers or going to be teachers don't have a clue about how children learn and a quickie course does not cut it folks - learning is hard! So if you want a good program - insist that your child's teachers have BEd degrees as well as some post-grad training. Finally in all fairness as an American I will openly tell you that the K-12 education system in the States is broken also - I think a little home schooling is great - I have a 7 yr and we work on projects which she will never get in her Thai bi-lingual program. Best of luck on your search. Dr CJ

    The Value of a Tourist.

By Sean Moran, Created on: 18/01/2009, Last updated on: 15/12/2010

» What are some of the most common positive and negative results of foreign tourists from overseas visiting Thailand? Thai opinions welcome, kap.

    • ATM commented : [quote="patrickoniam":19zkcwzb]i think that if you are a tourist in another country - you need to acknowledge that countries' rules, customs etc as a tourist, it is up to you to earn the respect and respect the locals. If you do that in thailand, i guarantee you, you will recieve that back. Thats how thai people are - in general. Regardless of how much money you spend there But on continuing on volunteers and my posts - some tourist act like complete idiots and have no respect at all. And im sure they act the same way in their own country Best example is Australia - Australia has no identity and no real history or culture of its own, so aussies dont understand other countries' cultures/customs/way of life - so when aussies do travel overseas - in particular young males, they act like they do back home cause they have no clue. I can say this cause as i said previously, Im thai myself but have been in Sydney for the past 25 years. Ive seen these types of tourists and its not just in Thailand Im sure. But i have seen them in Phuket, Phi Phi and Koh Phangan for the full moon party where they trash the beach completely. These are the tourist Thailand can do WITHOUT. Theyre the back packer types that spend crap all money ( which is ok) but the main thing with them is little understanding and respect. They think they can just go overseas and act like they do back home. And treat locals like they treat people back home. These people need to learn the hard way and spend a couple of days in a thai prison!!! Im sure that will sober them up and knock some sense and respect into them in no time[/quote:19zkcwzb] OMG you say that Aussies have no understanding of other countries cultures and customs because we have no real identity , history and culture, at the same time you admit to having lived in OZ for 25 years. Patrickoniam do you think our great nation just appeared out of nowhere. One other thing "mate" its not the tourists that completely trash the beaches and its not even the tourist operators fault ,but the fault of corrupt and incompotent thai officials.

However, for the subject that we're discussing, the exception is the rule here. And ignorance of the law is no excuse either![/quote:2p7562a0] I think you will find that Les Majeste is a "Criminal Offence" and not a "Civil Offence". In most countries, you cannot be sent to jail for a Civil Offence, only fined. triptrip: If you go to page 2 of this forum, you will get a clue as to how to find the book and read it for yourself. I admit, I did not read a great deal of it...as I said, it did not appeal to me. It is fiction though and the offending passages were not directed at any real person.

Are the foreigners finding a sense of peace in Issarn?

By pachangamac042, Created on: 07/03/2009, Last updated on: 14/05/2009

» Dear FOS, I quite agree with you. I-Saan can still be a very charming place, even for me, I do see two different faces of I-Saan. The country side with its villages and the big metropolitan areas. I grow up in a little village with some 500 inhabitants myself. In our village there were more cows,...

    • DocN commented : @ATM Thanks! @FOS Really: I don't want to win anything here! 1) There are bars on Patpong (2) like Cosmos...for example...where a lot of Thais go! I never said anything about GoGo Bars. If a "bar girl" is a woman who works in a bar, that includes the onew were the girls are fully covered and do not dance on the bar! 2) Honestly: I do behave very nice and I think I can say that IF I done something wrong , it was not intended or because I just give an F for rules and traditions. In fact I heard many times that I am even too catious not to "hurt" anyone. That's why the horse went to drink! He was my boss, he was thai and I was here for a week! 3) I prefer people to be open and honest with me, as I am open and honest with them. Example: why does a taxi driver loose his face if he says that he doesn't know where the place is that I want to go to...instead of driving me around the place for 45 minutes with obviously not a single clue where I want to go??? Actually: I am easy going, so if I say "mai pen rai"...I mean it! But I will not say "mai pen rai", if my landlord clearly rips me off! This is not "being nice" but avoiding any f-ing problem in order to go along with a comfortable life! (I could go on about how this also affects daily and political life!) By the way: this is Thailad, this is the culture and I can not change it! But that doesn't mean I am not allowed to question it and the intention behind it! I thank you for your honest and straight forward words. But as much as I will try not to judge every Thai by the guys that treat me like the stupid farang I may be, I just ask for people not to judge me after the fat bellied (I am overweight!) sex tourists with no manners. I know to behave, I meet everybody respect (believe it or not) ...and maybe I should judge more thai people by the way you are: open, informed.... It admit that the events of the past 5 months realy have spoiled my look on Thailand and the Thais...but...sorry to say...THAT is clearly their fault! Have a nice day anyway!

    Rude immigration staff

Land purchase through Thai spouse forbidden: Land Dept

By Suttisan, Created on: 28/05/2009, Last updated on: 02/10/2016

» -- Land purchase through Thai spouse forbidden: Land Dept The director general of the Land Department has reiterated that foreigners using Thai nominees to buy land anywhere in the country will have their land title deeds revoked if caught – even if the nominee in question is a lawfully wedded...

    • prommee_NE commented : Having read through the posts in this topic, I am still not quite sure of the law. Is this a new law that has just been introduced? Or is it an enforcement of the existing law? When my wife purchased some land for our house, I had to sign a waiver of rights to the land. That is, should we divorce in the future, I could not have any claim on the land. In the past there was a limit to the amount of land that could be purchased by a foreigner's spouse, but I believe this is no longer the case. Some time ago I recommended that people read the following book (Available in English): The Thai Village Economy in the Past. By Chattip Nartsupha (published in 1984) In the book there is a reference to the historical buying up of land by "Chinese Loan Sharks"...eventually they were made to give up all the land they had obtained (very cheaply by using high interest rates on the loans) and it was redistributed to the village people. It is probably the fear of this happening again (ie none of the villagers owned the land, rather than "loan-sharks") that has made the land purchase by foreigners so difficult. =========================================================== Edit: Oops! Just been to the link to the other thread provided by Ian...guess it is all covered there. Leave this post since I think the book is worth reading and te last paragraph may be the clue to it all.

    Giving directions in English

» Getting around Bangkok is not all that difficult. All you need to do is get an address, take the train at the nearest BTS or MRT station, get into a taxi and hope for the best. However, what happens when a) places are not near a station and b) few, if any, signs are in English?
