» Life has meaning again, now that Downton Abbey has returned to our TV screens, its fifth season beginning last Sunday. Its otherworldly visuals continue to draw me in, with the upstairs goings-on of the aristocrats and the downstairs drama among the servants still as captivating as ever. I actually have to remind myself every time I watch an episode that people from another continent in this world of ours actually lived like this less than 100 years ago: that cooks had to dine separately from the rest of the servants in a stately home; that members of the upper class changed clothes as often as five times a day; that it was inconceivable that a proper lady or gentleman would have to perform actual work to earn a living.

» When shopaholics of the world plan a splurging spree, Kuwait is seldom the first country that comes to mind. It's not the sort of place that registers on the world consciousness, fashion-wise, the way France or Japan does, but this Gulf country, with its population of roughly 4 million, has been home to the hottest names long before Bangkok has -- despite its religious limitations and seemingly sleepy landscape with an even sandier backdrop. While hardly being tourism-amped as a shopping mecca, it does just as well as such much-more-buzzed-about Middle Eastern counterparts as Dubai. So much is the demand for fashion there that two Thai designer brands, Tawn C. and S'uvimol, have set their sights on this lucrative market and celebrate official launches in Kuwait City this season.

» If you ever get the chance to chat with His Excellency Karel Hartogh, the Netherlands Ambassador to Thailand, you would be amazed at how the breadth of his well-informed conversational topics (and his involvement in them) can range from beach dangers and endometriosis to flood management and yoghurt.

» The little lady dressed in an androgynous total look of denim and minimal make-up, who happens to be the designer and founder of new fashion label Commit a Sin, has to get a few seconds of shut-eye every so often during the interview to recollect her train of thought. It can only be expected, as Pattamon “Jan” Taechanarong has been up until 5am preparing and getting the last things in place for her upcoming fashion show. Yet, she hardly minds the physical and mental strain that comes with the workload of her new business.

Making its debut appearance at the Sands Expo & Convention Centre from Oct 12-15, the fair has established itself as an exemplary contender likely to emerge as the next top ruler of Asean's fine jewellery exhibition.
