    » American guitarist Ry Cooder released his first studio album for six years recently. The Prodigal Son (Fantasy Recordings, USA) has put aside his more politically engaged music -- as heard on a series of albums, Chavez Ravine (2005), My Name Is Buddy (2007), Pull Up Some Dust And Sit Down (2011) and Election Special (2012) and returned to a more-gospel oriented sound that he created on his early albums.

    » World Beat is in mourning this week, following the news that journalist and much-loved Bangkok Post columnist Bob Halliday passed away. When World Beat started, way back in March of 1994, I had the good fortune to share a page in the Outlook (now Life) section with Bob's erudite and witty column on classical music. A true renaissance man, Bob always used a funny pseudonym, preferring to work in the background to let his writing on music take centre stage. He was at home writing about his favourite, Bach, or the latest Polish avant garde composer.

    » Many Asian countries celebrate the ancient bon festival around the seventh lunar month, although in Japan the festivities are usually held in the middle of August. The festival is ancient and dates back to one of Buddha's disciples, Mokuren, who wanted to ameliorate the suffering of his deceased mother. To do this he danced what Japanese people call bon odori (bon dance), which is performed by everyone in the community to welcome the spirits of the dead, to celebrate their ancestors.
