Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 21/06/2019

» Ah, Bangkok -- the city of traffic, dangerous sidewalks, delicious street food, scammy taxi drivers and jumping-on-the-bandwagoners. Bangkokians love getting on the latest trend and craze, so when the salted egg phenomenon hit, it was only a matter of time before we were swimming with all things kai khem. Lo and behold, we are now living in the age of the salted egg. Everywhere you look, there seems to be a special salted egg dish or snack that you can try. If you're feeling overwhelmed, I get you. If you're wondering how the heck salted egg is a thing, I get you, too. I wasn't entirely sure myself. But in the spirit of top-notch investigative journalism that we are known for at Guru (wot?!), I decided to embark on a salty journey. For the sake of you, dear readers, and so that you don't have to gorge yourselves on everything salted egg, we present salted egg delicacies the city has to offer, with the real question answered: Yay, Nay or Meh.

    What's in a face?

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 30/08/2019

» Hom Nguyen has had quite a journey to be where he's at. Arguably, he would have entered the art scene much earlier if not for life and responsibilities hindering him (adulting is hard, folks). But one pivotal and rather painful event catapulted him into it and the rest is history. Now, after having famous and iconic people as subjects of his tantalising and intriguing portraits, as well as having held exhibitions in many parts of Europe and Asia, the French artist brings his art to the Big Mango at the Galerie Adler with an exhibition titled "Racines", curated by Laurent Macaluso. Guru chatted with Nugyen about his journey, art and exhibition in Bangkok.

    Classic British

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 13/11/2020

» Though Britain is known for giving us the Spice Girls and 007, it's safe to say that nothing beats what they've given the culinary world: the simple yet delectable fish and chips. They're not necessarily difficult to find here but a few places serve their "version" which is a far cry from traditional fish and chips. Fortunately, I've found two places that won't disappoint.

A little wining and a little dining

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 13/09/2019

» Within Thong Lor 13 lies 13 Wine & Dine, aptly named due to the soi it's located in, as well as the fact that it was founded by 13 people who are passionate about food and wine. The dimly lit resto, which gives off seriously romantic vibes, is designed with a touch of subtle elegance in sleek black, almost pulling off a fine dining sort of atmosphere though they don't consider themselves fine dining. The bar on the first floor is beautifully lit and bathed in light while the second floor offers a quieter and private dining area, all while instrumental versions of songs from legendary bands like The Eagles fill the air. Now that the scene is set, onto the food.

    Brunch crunch

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 09/08/2019

» Cozy brunch places never go out of style. After all, who doesn't want a relaxing atmosphere while dining on great food? Although Toby's has been around for about four years, it recently underwent renovations. While the outside facade may be familiar to those who frequent the brunch haven, the inside has been tweaked to give it a minimalistic feel with lots of natural light that, strangely enough, is what you would think of when you think of brunch places. In other words, Toby's gives off brunch feels. There's plenty of Instagrammable spots, a lot of places to either by yourself to enjoy the peace and quiet or with friends for a meal and catch-up. But of course, that's all just one part of the equation.
