Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 26/09/2023
» This year has been nothing short of happening for German footwear brand, Birkenstock. Just recently, the company -- best known for its premium sandals -- filed an initial public offering at the New York Stock Exchange, which could value the company at US$8 billion (288 billion baht), according to estimates.

The sea, the sky, and a new line of menswear
Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 23/03/2017
» The Sirivannavari label keeps tallying up more and more with every collection. Last year it was denim. This year sees the debut of S'Homme, the brand's first foray into menswear -- which also meant a much larger male audience and men's magazine presence at the fashion show last Wednesday. HRH Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana's eponymous fashion brand returned to its old stomping ground at Siam Paragon with the familiar stage and orchestra.

Three's a charm

» One of the most anticipated fashion gatherings of the year is about to be smaller than ever. This year, Fashion Fieldtrip, which features shows by Bangkok's cultishly followed brands, including Asava, Issue and Vickteerut, will be welcoming only 150 spectators. This is a stark difference to the guest list that reached four digits in the past. Whether Fashion Fieldtrip is returning to its roots or is just finding an excuse to downsize in the face of an economic downturn has yet to be seen with how well the shows turn out on Sept 17 at Bangkok City City Gallery. Still, with this relatively new space at Sathon playing host to a handful of highly buzzed and hot exhibitions and events in the past few months, it is in good taste that the three founders of the club decided to hold their fashion/art exhibition inside this popular white box.

Soi Sesame

» Ryan Dillon knows tables around the world intimately. "There's usually a lot of gum," he says from under a table at the Siam Kempinski's business centre. The American muppeteer was sitting on the floor under the table with his arms raised -- a position where he spends most of his time as the performer of Sesame Street's red furball Elmo. Recently in town last month, Dillon and Elmo were out and about in Bangkok to promote the new season of Sesame Street, which airs on MCOT Kids every weekend on 8am.

New looks

» Last month, Fashion Field Trip returned for the sixth year to showcase their autumn/winter collections. Held at Sathon's event hot spot Bangkok CityCity Gallery, this year's shows are not the mega-spectacle they usually are, with at most 150 spectators at each show. Still, shows should always be about the clothes, and it's relevant that Vickteerut, Issue and Asava all thought it was appropriate to scale down and return to their roots. In this digital age, it's easy to drift away from the fact that the purpose of shows has always been for press, buyers and VVVIPs of the brand -- not, you know, everyone who owns a smartphone. There wasn't much legroom, with the gallery's small space and even more limited seats, this year, so here's our recap on the industry's big three this season.

Dancing queen

» Hailed as a woman who has revived modern tap dance, Sarah Reich commands a strong following -- her YouTube videos have garnered almost 1 million views. Fusing a funky street style and catchy beats of today with classic tap techniques, it's not just swing music that she taps into: Lady Gaga's Bad Romance and Star Wars theme songs are among her playlist. The tap awakens, indeed.

The international voice

» A thousand unread messages are waiting for Nida "Rimi" Doowa in the hilariously named chat group "Choom Tang Siang Tong" (Junction Of Golden Voices) on Line. Her fellow contestants from The Voice Thailand Season 2 are clearly a chatty bunch, but the Thai-born Indian smiles at the thought of other things the show has brought her in launching her music career.

Sentiment lost in symbols
Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 11/11/2015
» Personally, November is a bit of a bummer month, for not having anything to look forward to. The only festive frolicking is Loy Krathong -- and I'm not sure what that commemorates or celebrates precisely. Out of habit and some weird justification, my household will probably have to float something in our little village pond. Mostly because it's become a bit of a societal requirement -- you're considered a total misanthrope if the neighbours notice that you don't show up. Besides being shunned by the village, would I be forever blacklisted by the water gods for choosing to opt out of this eye-watering and ecologically reckless festival?

For the love of design
Life, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 26/03/2021
» When House of Fritz Hansen in Soi Somkid first came to life in 2017, the white house from the 1950s it inhabited was polished into a showroom to display how luxury Danish furniture pieces could fit into a Thai home. Sleek and clean minimalism usually comes to mind at the mention of this Scandinavian name -- but the global rebrand that has been set into motion since last year is injecting quite a popping touch of colours, fun and modernity to its overall aesthetics.
