» It is becoming increasingly clear that there will be no tourists arriving in numbers before the majority of Thai people are vaccinated. A country that depends on close to 20% of its GDP on travel and tourism should by now be right up there with Israel in terms of inoculations or at least at par with the UK to be able to open up this coming summer.

» Former Education Minister Somsak Prissananantakul favours providing students with a better understanding of history (BP, Nov 3), so long as a process known as chamra prawattisat be undertaken, in which academics with differing opinions come together to agree on a standard interpretation. This proposal sums up much of what is wrong with Thai education, and perhaps Thai culture as well. Why have a standard interpretation of history? So it can be crammed down students' throats for later regurgitation on command? History is like a photograph. It captures events from a specific angle, with a specific depth of field, and perhaps through various filters. Why not expose students to multiple interpretations and let them, through discussion, identify the biases in each and, in the process, develop critical thinking skills?

Thai racism again

» Great to see the letter from Jan Servaes, especially as his position with Unesco had been communication for sustainable social change. As he very politely pointed out Thailand appears to have no respect for the institution of marriage especially if one partner happens to be a non-Thai. At a time when Immigration is often stating that visitors and stayers need to have the correct visa it seems that they themselves don't wish to supply you the pertinent document.
