» At the end of last year, Thailand's cabinet approved a new legal draft in principle to set up the National Digital ID (NDID) company. The company will build and oversee a digital platform that allows businesses and government departments to verify citizen identities against each other. This project sets out to be a key enabler for Thailand to move towards the 4.0 era.

    Moving towards digital government

News, Sutapa Amornvivat, Published on 19/09/2018

» I recently joined a panel discussion at the Ministry of Commerce's forum on technology development and connectivity in the CLMVT (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand) region. Talking about this topic often brings us to physical connectivity like road and rail; while we overlook another important aspect of connectivity especially in this era -- the flow of information or data across countries. This type of connectivity forms a crucial part in supporting sustainable development and shared prosperity.

Thai healthcare in the digital age

News, Sutapa Amornvivat, Published on 15/08/2018

» A few weeks ago, I participated in a workshop to rethink the master plan for the Thailand Centre of Excellence in Life Sciences (TCELS), the committee of which I serve as a director. This reaffirmed my belief in Thailand's potential within the medical sciences and healthcare industry. As a country, we are already renowned as a medical service hub of Asia. With recent advancements in technology, we can further build on the strong foundations especially in the area of research and development (R&D).

» Last month at the SingularityU Summit, I was exposed to some of the latest and most exciting technologies across various sectors. Of particular interest to me were the technological developments within the agricultural sector -- an industry so vital for Thailand.

» Over a month has passed since the Facebook scandal which has sent shockwaves across the tech industry and around the globe. Rising above the shadow of machines

News, Sutapa Amornvivat, Published on 17/01/2018

» The Thai National Children's Day has recently passed -- a special day which not only celebrates, but also reaffirms the importance of the young generation as the future. While it is clear that the children of today will eventually grow to be the leaders of tomorrow, it is much less clear what exactly that future will look like. In the spirit of Children's Day, I want to discuss how we can best prepare the future generations for an increasingly technologically-driven world.

News, Sutapa Amornvivat, Published on 17/05/2017

» Over the weekend, computers worldwide were hit by a cyber attack of unprecedented scale. The malware, known as WannaCry, holds your data hostage until a ransom is paid. What has transpired in such a short period of time demonstrates the fragility of data protection and the risks associated with this technology. Public fear and anger could bring about changes that hinder future innovators, unless a middle-ground solution is established.

Recovery on thin ice with Trump presidency

News, Sutapa Amornvivat, Published on 23/11/2016

» Donald Trump's win may derail the long journey of global recovery. This seismic shift in the political landscape stems from an internal economic root cause and likely extends into dire economic consequences globally, especially for emerging markets like Thailand. After much inconsistency in Mr Trump's presidential campaign, his team that will be unveiled over the next few weeks will be critical for the global outlook next year. It seems we will be "kept in suspense" into Christmas.

    National sovereignty concerns in cyberspace

News, Sutapa Amornvivat, Published on 19/10/2016

» Recently, I was called upon to write a short memo for a policy-letter collection to the would-be 45th president of the United States; the piece would be framed as a policy suggestion in response to shifts in the strategic outlook and value of Asia's rising generation. Clouded in the harsh political rhetoric of personal characterisation and domestic focus during year-long presidential campaigning, one issue with immense global impact in the age of connectivity has yet to receive sufficient spotlight: cyber-security.

Thailand must prepare for challenges ahead

News, Sutapa Amornvivat, Published on 18/05/2016

» In February, I discussed, with cautious optimism, the reality of our transport megaprojects and the sizeable impact on businesses. In particular, the service sector would subsequently flourish. As urbanisation accelerates from better connectivity, property and retail developments will quickly follow. Tourism businesses will expand to these new urban cities. Relatively new service businesses, such as transport maintenance, would be established in key junctions and pit-stops, as trains, planes and ships multiply.
