    Pandemonium

Life, Kong Rithdee, Published on 30/09/2022

» The first shot of Athena will be discussed in every writing about the film. A bravura choreography of movement that begins with an intimate close-up of a face and ends, after 10 blood-rushing minutes, with an explosion of revolutionary rage -- a la Les Miserables and Do You Hear The People Sing? transported to a predominantly-Muslim Paris suburb -- that opening shot is so hypnotising and immersive in its non-stop kineticism that we're led to forgive that it's also an earnest show-off, a proud enshrinement of style and attitude over everything else. Romain Gavras, a filmmaker known for making music videos for Jay Z and M.I.A, will cement that approach with many similar shots throughout the film -- long, seemingly uninterrupted shots with parkour camerawork full of angry bodies -- more than enough for aspiring filmmakers of the world to slobber over.

» 'My Dearest Khun Prisna, I am now in one of the most beautiful places. Our hotel's name is 'Castello del Sole' (Castle of the Sun). Isn't it chic? The name is like one in a fairy tale. This town is so cute. It has a bright-coloured lake and nice houses on slopes. Routes and paths criss-cross the hills. Colourful flowers blossom everywhere ..."

    The spread of lifestyle markets

    Life, Published on 16/03/2016

» As the city's iconic bazaars like Khong Thom, Sapan Lek and Pratu Nam have been cleared out for "peace and order", a new breed of market has changed the way some Bangkokians perceive the meaning of good old talat. "Lifestyle market" has popped up in Bangkok's empty lots and squares almost every weekend over the past year. They're usually well-organised, balmy, and clearly targeted at the middle class or higher. The last two months of 2015 alone had 16 events, all run by different entities, including big names such as The Great Outdoor Market, Art Box, Noise Market and Area Five Art & Market Fair.

Documenting the eye of the storm

Life, Achara Ashayagachat, Published on 21/01/2015

» When 46-year-old Nikolaus Freiherr von Nostitz, better known as Nick, sent emails to his contacts on Dec 20 seeking financial help, some thought it was a scam. Soliciting donations is uncharacteristic of the outspoken but humble Nostitz. For years, people could see that the German was a modest guy who roamed around Bangkok on his decade-old Kawasaki GTO motorcycle to cover the turbulent transformation of Thai politics, from both sides (or more) of the conflict.
