When good intentions backfire

» "Sometimes/ It falls upon a generation/ To be great/ I ask all humanity now/ To rise up/ Then we can all stand/ With our heads/ Held high," begins the Chris Martin-curated Global Citizen EP 1 with opener Rise Up featuring an excerpt from Nelson Mandela's now-iconic "Make Poverty History" speech. It's an apt start given the wholesome intentions of this EP, although it feels slightly jarring to hear one of the world's greatest speeches getting paired with the euphoric synths supplied here by the Norwegian production behemoth Stargate. The song is clearly engineered for a stadium/festival setting, so casual listening might not be the best way to approach what would otherwise be a stirring anthem.

» Over the years, avid neoclassical fans may have seen the name Anne Müller popping up alongside the genre's staples like Nils Frahm, Ben Lukas Boysen and Ólafur Arnalds. And for good reason -- the classically trained Berlin-based cellist and composer is known for her inventive approach to compositions, a skill which has manifested itself in her (perhaps best-known) contribution to Frahm's 2011 7fingers and 2017 Solo Collective Part I, a live project she co-founded with violinist/singer Alex Stolze and pianist/conceptual artist Sebastian Reynolds.

» Fwends' former guitarist Yuki Suwansopa has described his solo project Dimming Air as "a kind of atmosphere that will have an impact on anybody, anywhere, anytime". Evidenced by early singles like Good Morning and First Sat On The Beach, this broad-view approach now gets translated fully into his debut LP, Love Letters In The Sand. And as you may have guessed from its title, the eight-track full-length debut draws inspiration from beaches and, according to the artist himself, is "full of captured moments/memories from the ocean".

The S.L.P. Experience

» When Sergio Lorenzo Pizzorno came out with his first solo single, Favourites, back in June, we were pleasantly surprised. The song, an unlikely collaboration with UK rapper Little Simz, gave us an early glimpse into what could be expected from Pizzorno's solo project -- a whole lot of wacky swagger coated with a good amount of sonic experimentation. Listening to it closely, you can easily detect that indie impishness of his band Kasabian as well as the genre-hopping tendencies of Gorillaz. It's an impressive balancing act of breakbeat backdrop and funky basslines that sounds entirely new and familiar all at once.

So begins Merrie Land, the second LP by The Good, The Bad & The Queen, a supergroup made up of Blur frontman Damon Albarn, guitarist Simon Tong from The Verve, bassist Paul Simonon from The Clash and Nigerian drummer Tony Allen. Titled Introduction, the album's brief opener is based on an excerpt from Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales -- the perfect premise for a record concerned with the uncertain future of a post-Brexit UK.

» While a compilation of cover songs is not an earth-shattering concept by any stretch of the imagination, a good one does have the power to bridge the gap between eras and connect/re-connect generations of artists as well as listeners. Conceived in 2009 by the Thai media conglomerate GMM Grammy to celebrate its 25th anniversary, Play Project gave rock-leaning artists a chance to cover their favourite tunes in their own playful style. Its first edition saw the likes of Bodyslam, Potato, Clash and Paradox reinterpreting a range of Thai pop classics including Bird Thongchai's Sia Dai, Mai Charoenpura's Sia Jai Dai Yin Mai and Nantida Kaewbuasai's Lakorn Chaak Sud Tai.

» Whew! What an overwhelmingly eventful year 2016 has been. Much like Bob Dylan's ambivalence towards his Nobel Prize win, we too can't fully wrap our head around what went down these past 12 months -- what with all the monumental changes in politics worldwide and a number of musical greats we've lost from David Bowie and Prince, to Leonard Cohen and Sharon Jones. Despite everything that transpired, this year has seen some great, sonically diverse releases. Here, we present to you this year's top 20 singles, a good handful of which are brimming with a political urgency that brilliantly reflects the tumultuous times we're all living in. (Note that these are not in any particular order).
