    Peace of prim

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 10/02/2017

» If you've ever found yourself around Thong Lor with time to spare -- whether it's waiting for that forever-late friend or in the rare instance when you find yourself being unfashionably early -- aside from drinking or eating your way round, there's really not much to do. Sukhumvit may be laden with spas, but the Golden Soi certainly could do with a few more -- especially ones that aren't going to tear your wallet apart. You know, not everyone who wants to get pampered needs to be dipped in a gold bath and get charged their monthly salary for it.

    Of art and alchemy

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 02/12/2016

» If there's anybody in Bangkok who knows how to make a good cocktail, it's Vesper. Testament to this is not only the seemingly obvious, that they achieved 17th place in Asia's 50 Best Bars 2016, but the fact that they almost always find themselves completely packed out on a Tuesday night.

    Holy cheeseus!

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 16/09/2016

» Do we need an excuse to write about cheese? Not really. Sure, we can justify it with a number of recent events that clearly call for celebration, and what better way to do it than by over indulging on that edible block of gold that always seems to lock our gaze in the outer aisles of Villa Market. The breakup of Hiddleswift? Maybe. Or how about the fact that our Dear Leader wants to standardise Thai food across the globe so that it all tastes the same (yay!). Seriously, who doesn't love a good ol' single-standard-tasting som tum?

    Tipple your fancy

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 24/07/2015

» Bangkok's nightlife has always enjoyed an abundance of variety. Whether you prefer sipping an overpriced cocktail on the 60th floor, sampling craft beers with the cool kids or getting trashed with backpackers on the kerbside at a 7-Eleven, this city's got you covered. Recently, though, BKK has stepped it up a notch, with brand new joints that offer a whole lot more than “black and coke” as a house special. This week, Guru takes a look at six of these watering holes and reveals what sets them apart from the rest.

    Bangkok food fight

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 08/05/2015

» As with the sweltering -- and constantly rising -- temperatures, Bangkok's culinary scene continues to expand (in direct proportion to the size of our bellies). You've seen the queues at snack shops currently on everyone's must eat" list. With so many of them around, it's a surprise we ever get anything done. But starve not dear readers, Guru has scoured the city to put some of the most raved about food items to the test.

    Lang Suan's saucy secret

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 22/05/2015

» Nestled in Lang Suan sits a bistro with a knack for steak frites. Mind you, this isn't the type of steak and fries you'll find at any old gastropub. With 75 years worth of history behind its legendary Cafe de Paris sauce, Le Boeuf's focus is on serving up the finest entrecote steak in Thailand. The bistro makes full use of its glass facade, decorating it with dainty details such as gold railings and retro lamps. The maroon tablecloths and tight seating is reminiscent of a Parisian cafe. Diners include expats and locals with a craving for the same dish they've tried in Paris and London.

    Absolutely dough-licious

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 10/04/2015

» With a successful first branch under their collective belt, owners Massimo Ducci and Lucio Sbriziolo have taken a brave step forward by choosing Silom as the location for their second home of Pala Pizza Romana. A good move, we think, as the aroma of freshly baked dough seems to beckon a constant herd of hungry office workers through the doors. The setting and decor are simple and unfussed, but to say that it's decked out like a fast food joint doesn't quite do the place justice. Dashes of green, orange and white spark up the atmosphere, giving it a modern look that not only embraces the pair's passion for sourcing fresh ingredients, but also their firm belief that good food needn't be complicated. With a balanced mix of expats and locals, the restaurant is packed during lunch and dinner hours, seven days a week.

    Haute cuisine, hotter views

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 30/01/2015

» One of the most anticipated dining spots to open in Bangkok, Vogue Lounge is already making a name for itself. A sense of exclusivity oozes wall to wall, and the classic tricolour scheme of black, white and gold emits an air of “je ne sais quoi” that makes you question whether you’re stylish enough for a table. During the day, large windows give reign to daylight, making the lounge an appropriate place for a business lunch. But as night falls, resident DJs and mixologists reset the mood with fancy cocktails and deep house music, partnered effortlessly with tapas-sized dishes created by chef Vincent Thierry. The outdoor area, reminiscent of a swanky New York City rooftop bar, provides diners with cool breezes year-round (air-conditioners help out during the hotter months). Diners include expats, businesspeople and stylish foodies looking for haute cuisine with a killer view.

    Winter pop-ups winter

Guru, Jarupat Buranastidporn, Published on 28/11/2014

» Noticed something different about Bangkok? No, it’s not the traffic-free roads or that Thais have stopped taking photos of their meals before eating (ha! Don’t be ridiculous). We’ll give you a clue: it’s in the air and it’s making us a little less miserable. It’s the beginning of winter, or, as we know it — the extremely short period of the year when the whole country gets giddy over a two-to-four degree dip in temperature. Nevertheless, we’re going to take full advantage of this and guide you to this winter’s best seasonal pop-ups.
