LIFE

A broad canvas

Muse, Parisa Pichitmarn, Published on 07/04/2018

» Not all of us will make our mark as Mona Lisa, but it is possible to be the centre star of an art piece. If you are a self-confessed shutterbug and lover of art, an interactive art exhibition is currently ongoing at Emporium right now under the name Museum of Me (MOME). Inside the pink pastel box, which has just popped up inside their department store, this museum's showcase will not be complete without its main exhibition: you. Get snapped upon entering MOME and get ready to see yourself turned into art works by 10 different artists. The summer museum visit all ends at the museum gift shop, which of course, sells mementos that star you.

» Kenny Ortega has another hit on his hands. If there's a movie featuring dancing, then we tend to think of this acclaimed American director, producer and choreographer. Ortega is behind various cult musical phenomena that different generations of teens have grown up with, from the 1987 film Dirty Dancing, Michael Jackson's This Is It concerts, to the globally-embraced High School Musical trilogy.

Dazzling, dreamlike Cinderella

» Good old storytelling and a bit of magic is what Disney does best (and should stick to). Let's all just sit back and be dreamy-eyed for a change — everything the Mouse House has churned out with a try-hard dark twist was terribly bland and forgettable (ahem, Alice In Wonderland) — or, in Maleficent's case, like watching an hour-long advertisement for Angelina Jolie.

» Uncle Nelson Howe sent 3 million viewers into hysterical laughing fits when a viral video of him swearing in Thai was posted on YouTube in March. Scripted, directed and shot in just a day by Salmon Books' cash cow writer, Thanachart "Benz" Siripatrachai, the video propelled Thanachart's book it was unashamedly peddling — New York 1st Time — to bestseller status.

Ain't no stopping us now

» 'I would like to thank my friends and family for supporting me through all this and letting me know that it's OK to study rotting leaves," said Professor Amy T. Austin during her acceptance speech last month in Paris. There was good humour and chuckles rang throughout the Unesco House, but there was also an underlying distress that provides a portal to understanding what sort of tribulations female scientists must go through.

Smoke and mirrors

» Magic. In an era of smartphones that can perform once-impossible tasks, the word doesn't quite evoke the same allure and mystique that it once did. But despite its diminishing appeal as a form of mass entertainment, the art of illusion still has a few rabbits left in its hat. In July this year, 13-year-old Thirawat Kongnugul glided past young wizards from all over the world to bag second place in the International Brotherhood of Magic's yearly Stage Contest in Arizona _ proof that Thai magicians still have a few tricks up their collective sleeve (see accompanying story).
