Think twice before going with Huawei

Life, James Hein, Published on 28/04/2021

» The Chinese firm Huawei is in the limelight again for allegedly snooping on the Dutch prime minister's phone calls, with the information used to track down Chinese dissidents. This was a while back and it only came to light now because back then the Dutch were worried about exposure. Huawei was able to do this because they have core components in the Netherlands' mobile network. The result was that Huawei employees could not only listen in on any conversation but also identify those in the conversations across their 3G and 4G networks. Even today, the Chinese have admin-level access due to the network management outsourcing deal. Huawei strenuously denied any wrongdoing but those thinking that their 5G Huawei networks will be safe might want to rethink this or look very carefully at the access granted under the contracts.

    Best of both worlds

Asia focus, Erich Parpart, Published on 30/10/2017

» Smart manufacturing does not always involve robots replacing people. Instead, robots should be viewed as enablers instead of disruptors, with productivity and efficiency enhanced by automation, artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT).

    Computing genetic manipulation

Life, James Hein, Published on 20/05/2015

» What is the next big thing? Microsoft and some others would like you to believe it is all things cloudy. The problems with that are factors like communication channels between continents, security of information, the reliability of a server somewhere else versus on-site and the army of hackers trying to get into all that information just sitting there. If you have seen the intro to CSI: Cyber you will know what I mean. Another group want it to be virtual reality glasses for all, but as the Google Glass demonstrated, people walking around with even small glasses were not appreciated. At least the VR goggles will mostly be at home. This technology still has quite a way to go.

    Mind your passwords

Life, James Hein, Published on 25/01/2017

» Google, Facebook and Apple are the names of a few companies working on artificial intelligence (AI). I don't mean the kind of AI that simply teaches machines to be useful to humans, though that is also being done everywhere. I mean the self-aware kind. After so long at it I think the bigger organisations are locked in a series of dead end paths. Instead, I predict the first breakthroughs will come from small, even one-man operations thinking outside the cube. As an aside, when it comes to the search giants like Google or Yahoo and social media sites like Facebook, they all have their biases so the results you see may not be all that comprehensive, balanced or accurate.

Choosing cheap Chinese Products over Thai jobs

By needchange, Created on: 17/10/2010, Last updated on: 24/11/2015

» Everyone knows the story of what has been happening in the US in terms of the trade deficit with China. If you go to Walmart, almost every product sold there comes from China. Walmart is America's biggest retailer if I'm correct. The trend is the same at many other retailers around the country. So...

    • huhahia commented : most of the time, you pay for what you get... we should think more about how to develop Thai industries rather than blaming the cheap products which Thai poor people really need. Don't forget China is one of countries (less than 5) having full industries. they can manufacture everything they need. Have a look of this list: China Thailand Train speed>350km/hr, export to USA, IND, Thailand ~60km/hr ? Nuclear Plant: 5 plants running. will build plants in UK. zero Airplane: C919 just finished assembly all import Aircraft: J-20, J-10, too many... zero Ship: No.1 in the world mainly import Iron and steel: No. 1 production in the world can be ignored IT's Alibaba, Baidu, Tencent Lazada ?? Computer: Lenovo (no.1 in the world) zero Phone: Huawei, XiaoMi, Vivo, Oppo, Lenovo, etc... ?? Super computer: No.1 calculating capacity in the world ?? White applicants: Haier, no.1 of world ?? If you only focus on the cheap products of China, your starting point is too low. Think about how to improve the Thai modern industries. Thai labor cost is much lower than China... If Thai companies could manufacturer can make same things as China, certainly it will be much cheaper. You know what... the pen I use in the office ... is made in Japan... Man, it's just a pen... nothing to do with hi-tech.... Learn from their strength, not focus on the weakness.
