Pain For Pleasure

» Piyanan "Pi" Kaensuwan and her partner Nutthaphat "Muu" Junpong are practitioners of all things BDSM (for those not in the know, that's sadism and masochism, bondage and discipline or dominance and submission) and are behind the Shibari Night BKK events that used to take place in the now-closed Maison Close. Representing themselves as a dominant cat and a submissive dog, they also manage the Facebook group Thailand BDSM: "Let's Play and Learn", where they hope to provide information for newcomers and veterans on erotic role-playing practices. The pair, along with figures in the shibari (rope bondage) and BDSM scene, recently hosted the very first BDSM Art Fest at De Commune. The event served as an introduction to the BDSM lifestyle and as a platform for education and to destigmatise the practice.

Beyond the ropes

» In Bangkok's Charoen Krung area, tucked within an alley lies Maison Close, a dark bar/art gallery and home to some of the more uncommon tastes in art from abstract calligraphy to ero guro. However, as you enter the venue on some nights, art isn't the only focus but a blindfolded woman hung in suspension with ropes. The ropes have been tied up by a rope artist and her model serves as a canvas for elaborate and intricate patterns. Despite looking uncomfortable, the model, dubbed a rope bunny, is in a state of stillness and relaxation, with the ropes symmetrically wrapped around the curves of her body -- something beautiful or mesmerising. This is shibari or the art of Japanese rope bondage. Enter at your own risk.

» The Mall Group has begun charging B1 for each plastic bag to coincide with the International Plastic Bag Free Day on Jul 3. Shoppers at The Mall, Emporium, EmQuartier and Siam Paragon are being encouraged to bring their own bags for all their shopping needs. It's a small but significant step towards the city's progress in reducing the use of plastic like many other places in Thailand. Even Central Group has stopped handing out plastic bags to shoppers. Additionally, they will not provide plastic bags on the 1st, 4th and 16th of every month reminding shoppers to bring in their reusable bags.

Hop Til You Drop

» Established by the folks behind the Craftpital bar at W District, Hoppy HRS lies just past the open-air food court between BTS Phra Khanong and Ekamai, on the even side of the road. Inspired from their trip to Chicago and their love for street food in the region (namely hot dogs), owners Sahachol "Micky" Chairat and Phatphitcha "Minnie" Suksangwarn decided to create a bar that could serve as a casual hangout spot where their friends can gather after work and enjoy locally crafted beer and sodas, as well as hot dogs. The small and cosy space gives customers a chance to relax on the couch near the DJ booth and sing their hearts out to 80s-90s alt rock. Anybody up for some karaoke to songs by Oasis?

» Concerts are awesome. Here at Guru, we have been to a fair amount of live shows of our favourite artists and bands, despite the ridiculously expensive tickets. And with every concert we attend, we see and meet the same kind of people. From the fans that seem to know the lyrics of every song to the ones who just can't seem to put their phones down as they record every moment of the show. We took the time to list our favourite (or for some, least favourite) types of concertgoers in Thailand. All in good fun.

» I may not be an art enthusiast/fanatic but I do appreciate any work of art when I see one. The amount of visual creativity and artistic effort one has put into something is quite admirable and rewarding for them. So when I stepped into Paco Bangkok, a small but cosy smoothie bowl cafe whose owners inject a bit of art into their desserts, you can colour me impressed with what I saw. » We've finally hit the half way mark of the year -- June and if you've been out and about, you may have noticed rainbow-coloured decorations (or at least rainbows on your Facebook newsfeed ) because we are in Pride Month. The month in which the LGBTQ+ community promote and express themselves and celebrate gender diversity and sexual identity. The gay pride movement is celebrated throughout the world ever since the Stonewall Riots of 1969 in Manhattan, New York, a pivotal event that led to creation of the movement for LGBT rights. Prominent figures in the community tell GURU what pride means to them and what are they proud. We've also compiled a few pride celebration events around the city that are worth everyone's attention.

» After DJing at friends' parties and weddings, John Budh, better known as Jonnie B, went on to become the founder of Trance Lovers Thailand, a community where DJs, fans and promoters can gather and share their love for the music genre. He, along with fellow local trance DJs have been responsible in organising trance events and booking international DJs to play at clubs and festivals. In addition, Jonnie B also manages Pure Decibel Academy, a music production studio that offers courses in DJing and electronic music production. He is developing the upcoming Dontri Festival, a music festival with seven stages that showcases the best Thailand has to offer in terms of electronic music — from electro, progressive, trance, to hip-hop, trap, hardstyle, etc. He talks to Guru about his love for the genre.
