    » Thon Buri is well-known for its historic old temples, scenic waterways, the diversity of its culture and the many culinary delicacies still made there. The Canal Protection Act of 1941 noted that Bangkok east of the Chao Phraya River, the area officially called Phra Nakhon, had a total of 64 canals while the portion of the metropolis lying on the west bank, Thon Buri, was served by 31 canals. However, in the interim, many of these have been filled in and built over or have become so silted up they are now too shallow to be navigable.
