Getting soft power right
Life, Published on 08/01/2024
» After three months in office, the Srettha Thavisin government has raved on about populist policies in the guise of digital wallets and soft power projects that will create income to boost our declining economy. With optimism, we learned that Paetongtarn Shinawatra, Pheu Thai party leader and head of the National Soft Power Strategy Committee (NSPSC), has drafted a budget of 5.1 billion baht to boost festivals and creative industries. Nearby, a motley bunch of musicians and technicians double-checked their instruments. A stream of chatter from a growing audience -- without any partition between the theatre and real life -- put unintended pressure on the band.

» On a Saturday morning, I strolled through a maze of narrow lanes in quest of a simple brunch at Bang Namphueng Floating Market, located in the Thai-Mon community of Bang Krachao. This was my second visit in two years and this time it was merely a stopover on my way to Samut Prakan.

Where nature and fantasy collide

» In the early morning, I awoke to a stunning vista of Cha-am beach set against azure skies. It was a bright day to unwind and soak in the splendour of nature by taking a deep breath of fresh air, perfect for my first hiking trip after working from home for two years. This was like a challenge to put my physical abilities to the test.
