    Power to her

Guru, Eric E Surbano, Published on 29/12/2017

» 2017 has been the year of women speaking up and standing up for themselves. And while there's definitely a long way to go in terms of gender equality, especially in Asia, it's inspiring to learn about AKIN ASIA in the Big Mango that seeks to empower and connect women from different walks of life. Hosting events like social dinners, workshops and panels, AKIN ASIA creates opportunities for networking and a space for women to share and discuss ideas. Guru spoke to Nicola Jones-Crossley, founder of AKIN ASIA, about the inspiring work she is doing.

    Cooking with a mission

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 22/12/2017

» Sustainability isn't a gimmick at Haoma restaurant (fb.com/HaomaBKK) on Sukhumvit 31. The new restaurant by Deepanker "chef DK" Khosla is tucked deep in the soi, but it's worth the effort to get there if you want to try fresh flavours that are picked out of its mini farm. Although we didn't get to do a proper review, judging from a couple of dishes we had, we wouldn't be surprised if Haoma would be in the next edition of The Michelin Guide Bangkok. We spoke to the 28-year-old chef-proprietor about his culinary journey and his green ambition.

» We first interviewed Thai-German Michael Biedassek for his role as the co-founder of bangkokvanguards, a unique travel agent which explores undiscovered paths in Bangkok. Michael is also involved in raising awareness on preserving local communities and organising the "Santa Cause" (http://fb.com/SantaCauseBangkok) event every year to provide gifts and necessities for less privileged children and their families. We wondered what he had been up to lately and what the upcoming Santa Cause would entail.

    Setting sail

Guru, Nimarta Narang, Published on 10/11/2017

» Bangkok has its charms, and there have been plenty of people enticed by this city. Yuval Schwok is one of them. Having grown up in Paris with a liberal Jewish background, Yuval always had a strong desire to travel and seek adventure. He accidentally arrived in Bangkok 14 years ago, and never quite left as he has now lived here for 12 years. It is quite fitting then that his first project was called The Overstay — a hostel, music venue and creative space all in one offering more than a place to stay for travellers and visitors. But for the past three years, Yuval has also been developing a new project called Bangkok Island, a boat that is set to be a prime venue for music and art. He hopes for it to not be like any other boat cruise, but rather a destination for artists and live music. We had a chat with The Overstay's founder about his new project, the challenges he has encountered and his take on the event scene in Bangkok.

    The theatre trap

    Guru, Published on 27/10/2017

» Cian Green, half Thai/half English, is directing Bangkok Community Theatre's upcoming play titled Circle Mirror Transformation (www.bangkokcommunitytheatre.com). The play, written by Annie Baker, chronicles the experiences of five strangers from different walks of life who are brought together in a creative drama class. Through various acting exercises, monologues and games, the strangers slowly reveal themselves in the process of getting to know each other. This may be a case of art imitating life as Cian himself has an acting background, with the exercises and activities perhaps mirroring his own personal experiences. We spoke to the man himself to learn more about his take on the world of theatre and directing.

    The food rescuer

Guru, Pornchai Sereemongkonpol, Published on 13/10/2017

» Tanaporn "Faii" Oi-isaranukul (second from left) is a donor relations coordinator and food hygienist at ThaiHarvest-SOS (fb.com/thaiharvestsos, thaiharvestsos.org), a local food rescue foundation which raises awareness around food waste and combats it. So far, it has rescued 65 tonnes of edible excess food and collected around 120 tonnes in scraps of food to make compost. One kilo of food provides up to three meals. Do the maths. They have provided 195,000 meals for those in need such as refugees and orphans. And, for every B1,000 spent, they serve 50 meals. Faii, a food science graduate from King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, tells us about the budding organisation and how you can help out.

Guru, Catherine Faulder, Published on 06/10/2017

» Kelly B Jones is pretty well known in Bangkok’s acting circles; in recent years, among many roles, she played the lead in Culture Collective’s play Death of Miss America and was in two feature films by Asylum Films, King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table and Troy 2, which is due to to come out at the end of October. Her current position as Director of IPC Green International Preschool and Nursery, Bangkok’s first eco-friendly school, is testament to this journey we all need to start walking, together. Read on to find out more about how Kelly balances her calling for acting with her passion to make the world a greener place.
