    Children on the margins

Outlook, Vasana Chinvarakorn, Published on 07/01/2010

» There is light in the eyes of these children as they laugh. It shines out of the darkness that surrounds them. Under the fluorescent glare, the youngsters are giggling or convulsing with laughter at the performances of their peers. One by one, they take turns staging one-of-a-kind shows - shadow and hand puppetry, a live theatre and singing skit, and even traditional ethnic Shan dances during which some appreciative audience members present the amateur performers with small cash gifts. The memorable night will no doubt be cherished by the youths for years to come. It's a rare opportunity for the 30 stateless children in Chiang Mai to spend three days learning the basics of art and producing this unique "festival" together.

» After the recent events in Bangkok, I suspect many companies will be considering the issue of a disaster recovery plan. Anyone who has received formal training in project management will be familiar with this term, but it has been my experience that many organisations ignore this aspect of project management and that of risk management in general when building up their businesses.

» Just what is 3.9G? To most of the world, 3.9G means LTE, long term evolution, but for Thai people 3.9G is a vague concept of 42MBPS, but quite what technology it is seems to be beyond most of the people I asked at the 3.9G Thailand Human DNA event.

The curious case of the reappearing mail

Database, James Hein, Published on 08/12/2010

» I use Yahoo for my personal mail and it is an example of how distributed computing can be a bit flakey. I access my mail from two primary locations _ work and home. I've noticed when I access mail from one location and then go to the other, the same items I've already processed are still there, even when I refresh. Sometimes I find they are still there or reappear when I reboot my computer or restart my browser. It gets really strange when I try to do something with a redisplay item, only to be told it has been moved or deleted.
